Looks like you need some real help, please allow me to provide input:

First, the oxygen sensor is def NOT your problem. Period. Why? Because the oxygen sensor does not start working until it reaches 650 degrees F. Since you speak of running rough COLD, the O2 sensor is not yet heated up, and it is ignored until it warms up, and then you state that the engine runs good. This eliminates the O2 sensor 100%, as it is controlling the Air/Fuel with a warm engine. Which means that the O2 sensor is WORKING CORRECTLY.
So, what you have is an engine condition which is running in what we call "Open Loop", where the ECU sends predetermined injection, with the two main inputs being coolant temperature and Air temperature. One or the other could be bad, which may explain the check engine light. It would be nice to know what the DTC code(s) are, the reason for the service light coming on.

I would check the fuel, Pick up some fuel conditioner at your local store dump in in then try starting it the next day. If it still runs rough the oxygen sensor(s) may be the cause of the problem, When is the last time you changed the Glow Plugs ETC?

Hi! It can mean diffrent for diffrent cases. It can vary from a loose engine cap to misfiring. Low oil pressure or faulty radiator can also trigger this problem, check for that. However, you are saying it is making a rough noise then it means there is a problem of serious engine trouble and you can't ignore it. Call a mechanic as soon as possible because there is user repairable part in engine. Contact Onstar if you have the subscription.

The O2 sensor is mounted on the exhaust mainfold, however you do not know if it is the oxygen sensor or any other fault until you have your car computer module scanned using an ODB II code reader.

See:

OBD-II - On-Board Diagnostic System

To buy a code reader:

A30 OBD II DTC Data Code Reader

INNOVA® OBD-II CAN CODE READER

OBD2 Code Reader - OBD II

Have you recently changed where you buy your fuel. i would try a few bottles of fuel conditioner and let it sit over night and see what it runs like the next day.

You are having Oxygen sensor problems, have the truck scanned while the light is on to confirm this or just save the diagnostic fee and replace them yourself. Good luck!!

There will not be just one answer that you can fix and be done the first time with the general problem you posted that your vehicle is having. We gave you some idea's based on the little info we have on your vehicles problem. You will have to afford to have it scanned for fault codes to pinpoint exactly what it is if you have tried everything suggested and your still having the problem.

  • Anonymous Jan 07, 2009

Oh and your oxygen senors may still be the problem but you won't know until you have it scanned like I said. Being "stuck in open loop" refers to the oxygen sensors not functioning properly most of the time so save the trouble and call autozone and see if they can scan your computer for free or pay to find the problem.

2001 f-250 7.3 diesel has intermittent running rough with surging. happens at all speeds. I changed the cps, had the tank dropped and cleaned/fuel line new fuel filter. The oil is full

Have the codes read. Without the codes it's just a guessing game. That code will point you in the right direction or even tell you exactly what's going on

Ford f350 diesel engine service light remains on after oil and filter change and disconect of battery

changing your oil has nothing to do with a check engine light. a disconnect of the battery wont clear a code anymore.only way out is to have the code cleared with a scan tool which it will most likely come back on until you have the problem repaired

I have a 2005 Ford F350 6.0 Diesel and It wont start after the motor gets warm. It also starts rough when cold. When it is running it runs great. Any help would be appreciated.

I had this same issue and luckily my F350 2006 was still under warranty. Basically there is a high pressure oil system that has a tendency to leak internally. You won't see any oil leak. When cold the oil has enough viscosity to keep the pressure sensor from not allowing the engine to start. When the engine is warm the system doesn't reach required pressure to allow the engine to start. In short it's a Ford dealer repair. Good luck.

I have f-250 diesel. keeps blowing fuse #22,glow plug controller. what might be the problem

You should start with the glow plug relay/timer.Check it to see if may be shorted.Remove the smaller wires going to it and turn the key back on,if the fuse does'nt blow then replace it,if it does then you need to unplug the fuel preheater in the filter housing and try the key on thing again, pretty sure it's one or the other.

Hard starting diesel, at approxamately anytime temp gets below 45 degrees F. runs rough when started, smokes, then once warmed up no problem. Has quit on me twice in traffic.

only 2 things can maake a diesel run rough at start up ,,1--- air in the system 2----- 1 or more of the glow plugs not working. this sounds like the latter ,if you have a couple of glow plugs not working ,it will miss on those cylinders until it warms up ,and the smoke is mostll exesive fuel when it does fire . recommend you check the glow plugs

2001 7.3 diesel rough idle w/ check the engine light on until it warms up and then it goes away. no codes showed when connected.

The only way to know for sure is to hook up a scan tool that can read live data, then you will know what is turning the light on.

It could be an injector fault or a glow plug circuit fault.

Where and how to change fuel filter on 1996 Ford F350 7.3 turbo disel truck? Is there more than one fuel filter?

Please don't forget to rate!!!!

Diesel Engines The 6.9L and 7.3L diesel engines use a one-piece spin-on fuel filter. Do not add fuel to the new fuel filter. Allow the engine to draw fuel through the filter.
  1. Remove the spin-on filter by unscrewing it counterclockwise with your hands or a strap wrench.
  2. Clean the filter mounting surface.
  3. Coat the gasket or the replacement filter with clean diesel fuel. This helps ensure a good seal.
  4. Tighten the filter by hand until the gasket touches the filter mounting surface.
  5. Tighten the filter an additional 1⁄2 turn. NOTE: After changing the fuel filter, the engine will purge the trapped air as it runs. The engine may run roughly and smoke excessively until the air is cleared from the system.
