I had this same exact issue. It's the brake relay in the left hand rear cargo compartment. if you have the rear fog light option that relay will serve as a replacement until you can get the correct one for your brake lights. Swap fog relay into that spot, order a new brake light relay and install in original spot.

These cars have a known issue with the relay in the BCM, Brake Control Module. If you go to the Volvo dealer they will probably replace the relay it for free. They are very common and only a few quid.

SOURCE: MY BRAKE LIGHTS DO NOT

I would guess the brake light switch is going bad. it is a push button type switch mounted to the metal arm which transfers motion from the brake pedal to the master cylinder. generally unclips or unsnaps and then unplugs from wiring. put a rug down on the dry floor next to the open driver's door. get a flash light and look up underneath the dashboard. follow the brake pedal arm up a few inches and you will see it. that is on a normal car, who knows how the swedes do it. they could drive up the complexity and cost by installing a pressure switch into a brake line somewhere which would double as a brake failure alert. first thing i would do is google volvo brake light switch and see what it looks like. then check under the dahsboard and see if you see it there

SOURCE: 1988 VOLVO 240 RR BRAKE LIGHT & BACK UP LIGHTS

In my own personal experience, you should first adjust the nuetral safety switch, it controls the reverse lights. After that, remove the jaw clip from the back of the tail ight, clean the connections, and the take a thin pick, and close the 2 metal pins together in the different sections of the jaw, with enough space between them to plug them back in. The connections inside the clip tend to expand away from the printed tail light curcuit over time.

Testimonial: "Hey, thanks for the tip! I will try it! every time I step on the brakes the "bulb out" light goes on & it's driving me nuts! thanks again."

Welcome to Fixya

If you already tried the paper clip method then most likely the tail light assembly circuit board films or wirings that is having the problem. Use a test light to check for power at the tail light assembly, while you have the switch bypassed.

Thank you for using Fixya!

brakes are brakes, push in , turn in, or two piece calipers. remove wheel , remove two bolts that hold caliper in place, remove replace pads if rotors look good if not remove caliper retainer and rotor replace or have resurfaced at local part store with service. if push in piston push in with c-clamp or piston tool, if turn in will be solid on top with slots for tool to turn in turn to right, tool can be gotten at parts store, if two piece take apart and put back then bleed brakes.

My 1999 xc v70 awd volvo wagon has a rear brake getting hot

the first thing you want to check is whether or not it has a heavy drag at the wheel caused by wrong pads, sticking caliper, improperly installed parts. Lift the car and try to turn the wheel. Just because they are certified does not mean they know everything. I'm certified too, but I also have experience with euros and the quality of parts that need to be used. If inferior quality parts are used it will cause this. It can create all kinds of problems and noises. Take it back until they get it right. Ask them what brand of parts they use. Let me know and if they give you any grief, contact me and I will advise accordingly.

The rear rotors on my Volvo v70 wagon are rusty! What can cause both rear calipers to stop working. Car has 70,000 miles on it.

your rear caliper adjustment is made by using the parking brake,if you don't use it on a regular basis it can cause the rear brakes to not work properly or at all.you need to use the parking brake regularly to avoid this.you may try working the parking brake repeatedly to try and adjust the rear brakes,if that works you may notice your brake pedal is higher or firmer.
