My temperature gauge goes up and down

Im at 84000 miles am i due for any regular maintainace such as fluid flush or regualar problems at this milage such as water pump or hose replacement. i believe my overflow for radiator coolant is low or empty but wanted to check while the car cools off so i can open the cap to see. cant find a leak visable but do smell fluid burning from time to time when it gets hot. could it be a bad cap?

Rather then guessing take it an have it checked ! Most all qualified repair shops have a tool that pressure test's the cap . Know for sure Plus they can pressure test the cooling system .

YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD. ALSO, YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING FLAW. THE PLASTIC INTAKE CRACKS CAUSING AN INTERNAL COOLANT LEAK. YOU CAN RESEARCH THIS ON LINE.

SOURCE: 97 transport 3.4 engine- New radiator,

Are your cooling fans working? that will definately be a problem if not working. if they are working shut car off and feel the radiator is it the same temp all over or is it hot in only top or one smaller area. if you do not have same temp feeling on all of radiator your radiator may be plugged.

Ford Taurus heater only blows cold air

remove the wire to the temperature sender unit and earth it out on the head. Turn on the ignition and see if the gauge goes to hot quickly. If it does then the problem will be in the sender unit so replace it. They are a resistance material inside that has high resistance when cold and the resistance becomes less as the water heats up so letting more current flow through the gauge so it goes up. They are prone to failure in an overheat situation. From your description the sender unit has failed inside

2004 Impala ls temperature dash gauge

fans came late on those car, like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block, and coolant has hard time to pass through, and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high, even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

At what milage should the radiator be flushed and

is there any white/grey residue in your radiator ? if not, it doesn't need to be flushed. change transmission oil and filter every 30,000 miles under normal usage, belts should be inspected at least once a year, a tune-up every fall is also recommended

When are you supposed to havetransmission fluid change in 2002 chevy prizm. Just bought it used with 84000 on it. Not sure if ever changed before and is brownish in color. Brother in law told me not to...

if brownish in color leave it be for draining or flushing it will allow all bulk particles that are worn away from the clutch facing to be gone for ever That will case the trans to slip or wear out before its time

Temperature gauge is fluctuating while driving.

I'm thinking the coolnat level is low, and this might be caused by a bad head gasket - At least $800 to fix - sorry.
