If the Service Engine Soon indicator light stays lit after you've started the engine, the On Board Diagnostics system (OBD) has detected a malfunction of the vehicle emissions control system. Contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible.
If indicator light is blinking, an engine misfire may be occurring, which could damage your catalytic converter. Drive in a moderate fashion (avoid heavy acceleration and deceleration), and have your vehicle serviced immediately.*
The Service Engine Soon indicator light illuminates when the ignition is first turned on (prior to engine start) in order to test the bulb, as well as indicate whether the vehicle is ready for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing.
Normally, the Service Engine Soon light will stay on until the engine is cranked, then turn itself off if no malfunctions are present. However, if after 15 seconds this light blinks eight times, it means that the vehicle is not ready for I/M testing.Check this link out Gary.

could be a engine /transmission fault recorded or a reminder that the vehicle is due for a service
take it to an accredited service dealer and have the fault code read, repaired or serviced and the light reset.

if your talking bout check engine light or ses meaning service engine soon light is blinking u have a cylinder that isn't firing, usually cause by ignition coil, but fuel injector, crank sensor can cause it but most times its a coil u can stop at any auto parts store get the check engine light read

most of the time when your check engine light blinks it means your having a converter melt down. you need to find out the cause of it. most of the time its something to do with your emission system. a simple computer diag from a local parts store might tell you what sensor is not working right. or you can go to your mech and it will only take a min to check out the codes.

you can get the trouble codes out by turning key on off on off on then watch the check engine light it will flash a number of times n pause this will give you codes to take to the auto parts store n tell them they will know most of them the service writer at the dealer can find the rest (example) blink blink blink pause blink blink =32 there could be several so do it a couple times to make sure you get them right and get them all

If your check engine light is blinking, you can take your car to Autozone, Advanced Auto or other parts house and ask them to get the engine codes. This ios a FREE service. It sounds like your camshaft positioning sensor, Cam Positioning sensor is bad. This is how comuterized systems tell where the cam and crackshaft are to set the timing. It sounds like you have timing issues.

i assume this car is automatic the o/d light is the overdrive light which is controlled by a little button on the gear select lever and usually service engine light comes on when it is due to be serviced like every 5,000 km or so hope this helps regards Jim
