I was having funny readings from starter taking too many amps fluctuations in my alternator and a bad reading from my battery the car kept shutting off finally it just died i changed all 3 and now it will not even crank it powers up i put the key in and it sounds like it wants to engage and start but feels like i have a short i checked all the connections everything is tight and corrosion free where do i look next maybe its the starter relay malfunctioning i dont know where the relay is to check
In a '97 model car most of your relays would be in the power distribution box by the battery, but very seldom that is the problem. Truthfully, without a multi-meter and some electrical systems understanding, you would just be looking in the dark. But having checked your battery connections-both cables are snug and tight on a new, fully charged battery? And the new starter had its mounting bolts down tight and, most important, the electrical connections (large battery cable end, and the small starter solenoid wire) all put back in place and tightened down?
Well, if you got it all back together right, turning the key to crank should send voltage to the small wire on the starter solenoid, energizing it and allowing battery voltage to pass to the starter motor and thus crank the engine over. If you have a problem with the starter, that's where you start looking=at the starter. Check if the small wire has power in start position of the ignition switch. Cheery-o's!

A tune up might be in order. By tune up I mean spark plugs, Distrubtor cap and rotor button and plug wires. I would also check the timing and replace the fuel filter.

replace the bolwer motor relay mounted on the fire wall the relay is stuck in the on poition.

have you checked the glove box light? another way to tell where your short may be is to hook a voltage meter to the battery and notice a drain on the battery with the key off! then start pulling fuses to see when the drain stops and that will narrow down the possibilities of the problem... the drain should be easily located if its killing the battery overnight... help this helps

If you suspect its a fuel problem best to do a fuel pressure test, you can rent a tester at auto zone and do it yourself. They also can show you how to use it and what pressure it should be. Also if you turn the key to on position you should hear a hum from the gas tank and then a click that is the pump running and the click is the relay, if you don't then the pump isent running, also chk. the fuse and relay, it could be as simple as a blowen fuse or a bad relay.

sounds like the vats system try cleaning your key wait 3 min if that doesnt work take it to the dealer and let them reprogram the vats system and probally replace your key
