2001 VOLVO S40 Battery light on and all elctronics on the car are cutting in and out when the car is on

I have a 2001 Volvo S40. For over a week now the battery light has been on but the battery has been replaced. I'm still having issues with the battery light being on and now the heater will shut off when you go over 1 RPM and the battery positive cable gets hot while running. I'm now having issues with other stuff in the car that are electronic acting up like the ABS and brake light coming on or the doors locking on their own. The truck will no longer unlock without using the key either. Its like its possessed. HELP!!!!

SOURCE: 2001 Volvo S40 missing key/remote

You car has an integrated key and remote.

There is a software that needs to be downloaded to the car. When the remote is purchased at the dealer it comes in a plastic package. That plastic package has a sticker on it. The sticker contains id codes.

There are two codes one is 16 digits/letters and the second one is 8 digits/letters.

Without this sticker the dealership can not program the remote/key to the car. If you buy a key elsewhere, make sure it has the codes included.

Unfortunately you cannot program a remote yourself.

SOURCE: Car won't start

If there is a blinking car icon with an "X" over it. This icon means the Immobilizer has been activated and hence won't allow the car to start. It could be due to a bad SCU, Start Control Unit. The SCU is actually the ignition switch on these cars.
Most of the time it's triggered by the anti-theft system..You can try this trick i learned that the dealers won't tell you...try locking and unlocking of the doors five times with the remote to reset the immobilizer and see if this helps.
Good luck...i hope this helps...please take a minute to rate me a fixya.

Try disconnecting both battery terminals and touching them together for about 30 seconds. This will drain capacitors and any stored power in the modules(or computers). When a battery goes dead and modules are deprived of proper voltage they make funny things happen... especially on Volvos. Good Luck

SOURCE: 2001 Volvo S40 sensors?

Maybe you have iron debris stuck to the magnetic ABS sensor. behind the hub. Remove the sensor from behind the hub and clean it or remove the whole hub. To remove the hub you need to remove the calliper and rotor, knok off the centre dust cap and undo the 30mm nut and then the hub will slide off and you will see the sensor. When re fitting the hub, toque the nut to 120NM then 30degs more ( that is from Volvo Vadas official instructions).

I've just replaced the hub last night on my 2001 V40.

2001 Volvo S40 petrol. With my Volvo S40 car, there is a problem with the Cooling System. Cooling tank gets empty after running.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

You have a leak, you just need to find it.

Look for leaks in the hoses. Do a pressure test.

The most common reasons a Volvo S40 has a coolant leak are loose hose connections, a broken radiator, or a failed water pump.

My airbag light came on in my 2001 Volvo S40. I don't know why. And I don't know how to get it off. I am also getting a check engine light.

Take battery loose and put back on. If this clears it and then later does it again. You need to get the trouble codes from : Autozone.com

Volvo s40 engine ticks, revs and cuts out

goodday! I asked a question about my S40 Volvo 2001 high idle. The answer is great, but I did not use it because I found out that it the car was giving another fault.

there are times when the engine woulld crank for a long time without firirng. when it finally does it would be powerless to an extent that it doesn't respond to the gas padel. its like it activates some form of inhibitor. When it behaves like that the only way to eventually start it is to disconnect the battery and wait for a few seconds. Now I wonder if it is still the idle motor

Brake light switch on 2001 volvo s40=my brake lights work sometimes and don't work sometimes. I have checked all fuses and bulbs. I have tried fiddling with the brake light switch and can make the brake...

Yes switch is the problem. Volvo claim they sell very few switches, probably because people bought new cars instead. Problem can be associated with failed ignition coils (2 of) but one does not cause the other but very confusing. Engine fails intermittently or conks out.
Reset battery earth connection on chassis bad design here. Clean off paint and thread also bolt coating. Even better, use brass bolt but do not overtighten. Volvo will try to get you to replace alternator which is not necessary.
Failing battery will light up all the warning lights but will not isolate the battery so if it shorts car will die and not run on alternator. If this happens disconnect battery until you get to garage.
Now you know you can buy an old S40 with confidence great car and very cheap for what you get.
