1998 Dodge Grand Caravan Transmission Problem

98 Caravan. Tranny. Slips time to time not bad though. Has never had fluid changed. This is my wifes van before we got together.

Now, the van wont engage into gear until it has been running for about 20 minutes. You have to shift it into all the gears over and over again before it grabs.

You can put it in D and sometimes it goes there but most of the time the gear indicator keeps jumping all over the place. When it does drive, sometimes it changes were it was and will kick out of gear.

Not sure what it is. Seems like and few differant things.

TCM???

Valve Body???

Tranny Computor???

I would try somthing simple first. sound like the tranny filter is cloged and it is taking awile for the fluid to get to the gears. change the fluid, filter and gasket first as would any other shop. easy to do also.

You might have the module checked but it sounds like the tranny is going out on the van

2011 Dodge Grand Caravan. Where can I buy the transmission pump gasket and o-ring at a reasonable price?

If it 2 weeks old you should take it back under warranty or get your money back. They sold you a lemon.

If the gasket isn't broken you can use gasket sealant, just make sure it is clean. I wouldn't trust sealant on a o-ring.

Here are the parts. Double check fitment to your engine.

Hi! I change the hidraulic fluid in the 86"-s Dodge Caravan, with A 413 tranny. Now the pump don"t pull up the ATF flui, and the tranny don"t start work...... What"s the solution??

What your saying, is you had a transmission problem!

So you changed the fluid, and now it slips.
That's why

Now you pull the trans and have it rebuilt.

Having owned a trans repair shop, and seeing a how
it is 24 years old. Put it to sleep and never buy any van type
vehicle again. They are unsafe in the event of an accident
and transaxles are junk.

1998 Dodge caravan AWD transmision slips at full throttle

Have you serviced the transmission latley? fluid, filter, band adjustment

Usually under heavy throttle causing the slip is caused by a seal in the pump leaking off hydraulic pressure letting the clutches slip.

Does it slip in all gears or just 1st.?
Does it slip in reverse?
The reason I ask this is because 1st and reverse use different fluid pathways,

also you can take it to a tranny shop and have them check the fluid pressure at the accumlator port to determine what the exact problem is,but my advice is to just drive it easy and make it last as long as you can,a new or rebuild tranny from a dealer would run 2500 or more.

there is a website www.car-part.com that you can use to find a replacement transmission

Transmission slipping 97 dodge grand caravan 3.3L V6 108,000 miles. when cold sometimes fails to engage for 20-30 seconds. Fluid leaks very slowly. I keep it full.

IF THE TRANSMISSION SLIPS THE FORWARD CLUTCHES ARE LIKELY WORN OUT OR THE TRANSMISSION HAS LOW HYDRAULIC PRESSURE, BOTH REQUIRE THE TRANSMISSION BE TORN DOWN AND REPAIRED OR OVERHAULED.

2001 Dodge grand caravan sport. Transmission slipping/ jerking. Seems to run only in second gear... still slips and jerks. Smells of burnt trans fluid and the level is low on the dipstick.

I need a little mor info. But the reason for the being stuck in 2nd gear is because when something goes wrong with the tranny. it goes into "LIMP" mode wich keeps the trans. from shifting out of 2nd when you are going forward. It does sound like your trans. is gone out though.

Transmission Removal and replacement instructions

I replaced the tranny in my 98 Grand Caravan Sport. It was time consuming but not terribly difficult. All of the sensors were on different jacks so it was easy to put the electrical parts back together. The flywheel was a pain though, the holes didn't quite match up but the person I bought the replacement tranny from told me to drill the hole out larger and it was fine. I would label every thing you can. Get a script for valum and take your time, thats what I did. It helped to have someone there to help me drop the tranny and lift the new tranny in. Hope this helps. I will keep an eye on this post in case there is something I can help with.

Yes, Unfortunately transmissions just don't stand up to everyday abuse like they used to. Fluid & filter changes are more critical now than ever. If it were me I would definately have the fluid & filter changed, as well as scanned for codes & perhaps software update. I have heard of many instances where a simple fluid & filter change has remedied the problem in these tramsmissions. If you have it scanned & updated if needed, prior to fluid & filter change, record the codes, then have them erase the codes, do the fluid & filter, try driving for a bit, then re-scan and see what comes up, you may just get real lucky, but no gaurantees. One thing you MUST INSIST on, is that they re-fill transmission with Autopar ATF4 transmission oil & nothing else. No matter what they tell you. Autopar ATF is the only transmission fluid that will give it the best chance to work as it is supposed to. Many cases of erratic, poor shifting has been remedied by changing from some other approved transmission oil, to Autopar ATF. So, go with the fluid & filter first, drive it a bit, and if it doesn't feel quite right, get it scanned again, and see what comes up. If it were me & it felt good after fluid & filter change, I would give it a week or 2 depending on mileage driven, and have it scanned again anyway, just in case. If a code does appear, and is something relatively easy & inexpensive to repair, I'd have it done & save the chance of causing $1000's down the road. People don't think twice about spending $500 + on a brake job,to help them stop, but get mad when it costs $500 to keep them moving. If you don't spend the money to keep you moving, you sure won't need to worry about stopping right? ha-ha Good Luck, keep us informed.

Transmission slips when its cold

Could be water in your transmission fluid, or its just burning out slowly.
Check the fluid to see if it is a clear reddish color. If not, then thats bad.

2004 Dodge Grand Caravan Water pump

If it's red, it's transmission fluid. Coolant would be green. Check the fluid level, don't let it get low, Chrysler minivans are prone to transmission troubles, and low fluid levels over time will ruin a a transmission. And be sure not to overfill, it's just as bad for the trans. Have the leak checked out and repaired, good luck
