You'll have to take out the torx fasteners and then take the cover off. Look closely on the inside to the right and you'll see a narrow piece of metal about the width of a coat hanger that goes up and make a 90 degree angle. Lift up by hand on the bottom of it and it should pop them open. Then your key should work again.

SOURCE: 96 jeep Grand Cherokee tailgate will not open

This is kind of tricky. OK let's start, you have to crawl into the rear hatch area from the inside of the car. You'll have to pull the rear panel off the hatch, a screwdriver between the panel and hatch near the window will work. There might be 2 screws on the panel you could take out. The trick is to pull the panel far away enough to stick your arm down towards the latch and release it by hand. We did this at the dealer all the time.

SOURCE: Will a 1998 jeep 4L 2.5 motor work in a 1991 jeep wrangler?

Most likely yes. One thing about the older Jeeps is that they did not change the models much from year to year. If the two jeeps had the same engine, they are probably nearly 100% interchangeable.

SOURCE: 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tailgate Latch

Many thanks, nascar2fever!

I had the same problem and of course started by trying to pry open the tailgate (gently). The problem was solved by undoing the top of the plastic panel on the inside of the tailgate until I could do a visual and slide my hand to lift the latch. The fix was to re-adjust the pull-rod to remove the excess slack in the latch.

SOURCE: 1991 jeep wrangler: alternator overcharging

It sounds as the voltage regulator which is built into the back of the alternator has stuck. Occaisionally this even happens on new ones. Would suggest taking the alternator back as it shoud be under warranty.

SOURCE: The rear tailgate door latch on my 2002 Jeep

Hello. I can assist you. Most likely, your door latch is broken and will need to be replaced. Historically these were metal and rusted due to exposure, soooooo now they are plastic and after a few hundred uses, they break. You can purchase the tailgate handle and replace it yourself but my recommendation is to let the shop do it as it can be a little tricky and often the linkage rods also need to be cleaned and lubricated. The total cost of this repair is generally about $75. Thanks for choosing Fixya!

Radio doesn't work, tailgate window won't latch closed, fuse? and where is it?

Before you get started, please review this article: Where's The Fuse?

Then, I can't give you any real good information about your vehicle because There is not enough information available. I would need to know YEAR, MODEL, ENGINE SIZE, TRANSMISSION (Auto or manual, Overdrive or no overdrive, 4X4 or 2 wheel drive) The wiring can be completely different depending on these things. The only thing I know from your post is that it is a Jeep.

There are at least, 2 fuses associated with your radio (some models have 3)

If your tailgate window is electric, the problems could be related, but I think this to be pretty unlikely. If it just doesn't latch, there is most likely something wrong mechanically with the latch itself. Sometimes the latch mechanism gets closed with the window open. In this case you would have to operate the key or window release button or lever whilr opening the catches on the latch. Then when you close the window it will latch properly.

Tailgate will not open

There is a cutout on the inner tailgate cover that can be removed with a screwdriver. This will give you access to the latch assembly. There is a small lever mounted on the latch assembly. When you move it toward the driver side it will release the tailgate.

This works on my 03 Liberty but not on my 05 Liberty. They both use the same type of latch. Does anyone know where to get a latch other than a Jeep dealer? Jeep wants $235.00 for the latch.
