Ford Escort Odometer Not Working

97 Ford Escort speedometer and odometer not working. Replaced speed sensor, no help. Found broken ground wire that kept speedometer from working. Repaired- speedometer OK, but odomenter still not working.

    my odometer and trip odometer stopped working as well, everything else works, but the odometer is making a clicking sound while i drive, i really dont care if i fix the odometer, but i want the noise to go away

    My odometer and tripometer stopped working on my 1997 ford escort wagon. My speedometer still works. Any suggestions on a fix or do I have to purchase a new odometer? Do I have to notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles if my odometer isn't working? Will it pass inspection if it isn't working? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Speedometer worked.Trip,and odometer did not. replaced the worm drive gear.;it was broken]. now the speedo starts at 20mph quickly jumpd to 80mph and operates normal from that point. How ever I'am only doing 35or40 mph. at 55mph appx. it shows I'am doing 160mph.Driving me NUTS! Thanks for you help

The speed sensors on the wheel are wheel speed sensors and are only for the ABS system.

Why ford escort wagon 98 odometer not workind, speedometer OK?
If the speedometer works but the odometer does not, the problem is inside the speedometer. Probably a stripped gear.

Hello BDG, The answer is no. If the VSS fails on your 97 Chevy, you will lose both speedometer and odometer functions. If your speedo is still working and your odometer is not, you have a broke odometer. This is a common failure with a lot of the older vehicles that were fitted with the mechanical odometer registers. Broke speedometer and odometer reader
you may need a car electrician as these things need troubleshooting.the only thing you can do is by checking all fuses however if other gauges and indicator lights are working then the fuse for the inst. cluster is ok.the speedometer has a sensor installed on the transmission while the odometer gets signal from the ECU so these two problems need separate solution

Dear Sir/Madam, The problem is electrical. The speedometer/odometer box needs to be removed from behind the steering wheel (or after removing the steering wheel)...The bulbfuses behind the panel need to be changed and new electrical connections made for the speedometer/odometer to work.

does your cruise control work? If not, check the wiring from the VSS to the speedo cluster. Check VSS connector closely for pin pudhout or corrosion

Sometimes, the VSS siganl is converted by the instrument cluster and sent to the PCM and speedo.

Check engine light on?

The electronic speedometer (17255) receives a speed signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731). This sensor is also used to sense vehicle speed for the engine management system and to regulate the cruise control when equipped.

Vehicle Speed Sensor The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (Figure 53) is a variable reluctance or Hall-effect type sensor that generates a waveform with a frequency that is proportional to the speed of the vehicle. If the vehicle is moving at a relatively low velocity, the sensor produces a signal with a low frequency. As the vehicle velocity increases, the sensor generates a signal with a higher frequency. The PCM uses the frequency signal generated by the VSS (and other inputs) to control such parameters as fuel injection, ignition control, transmission/transaxle shift scheduling and torque converter clutch scheduling.

The problem is going to be a worn or broken odometer gear. You can purchase the gear at odometergears.com for $29.00 with the shipping. Follow their how to repair on the Mustang to help in the repair. I believe you will have just the worm gear to replace.

Speedometer, odometer, cruse control & tranny overstopped working
If it has antilock brakes, the sensor is on the top of the rear differential. This sensor usually drives the speedometer. check the sensor for an open in its windings and also the wire that connects to it for any breaks.
