Volvo stalls and cuts off while driving and then you can smell exhaust fumes - what are other possible causes? Brand new battery, complete tuneup, new sparks, starter and accelerator are good. Had fuel line checked and told there is no linkage.
The
following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any
electronically controlled engine or transmission problem. The
engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only
for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the
transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in
most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory
of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as
the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done
is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system
for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for
engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained
technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then
based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the
correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer
replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other
basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with
the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine.
The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear
engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related
problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many
drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms
Thank you for responding. I have done all of the above - had 2 different import car mechanics look at it and me they can't find anything. Took today for fuel line and exhaust checking and still nothing found - except maybe "Sensor 2".
Then i would have no idea unless I did the actual testing.
O2 sensors never cause a real symptoms except poor fuel economy is they are bad, your sensor is likely just indicating the way the engine runs it is not the problem just a symptom of a fuel control issue, the O2 code is the key.
Great - thank you I will look into that.

SOURCE: Smell of gas fumes underneath vehicle near fuel tank
I also have a 2004 XC90 and a couple of months ago I had the exact same probelm... after multiple visits to my dealer's auto shop they figured out that it was the fuel pump. They replaced the fule pump and the smell disappeared. Good luck!

this sounds like a gas pressure regulatur. a few minutes after starting, you start smelling fumes, and are getting bad gas mileage right?

Check the emmisions box, loacted nr starter in the block, take it out and clean it, or replace it with a new one.

It's the solinoid. It's placed alongside the distributor. A coil about 1" around, and 2" long loosen, disconect the cable and lead coming out of it, repalce, and it will run fine then.
