My 1996 Pontiac Grand Am is overheating and had a coolant leek. i put radiator stop leak into the coolant resavour and it stopped the leak and the car runs fine now but my temp gauge still says the car is goin to overheat...change the thermometer?
If its the 3.1L it could be your intake manifold gasket , the material used for the gasket does not react well with GM's Dex-Cool antifreeze. The leak may not be apparent at first, but I would pressure test the cooling system. If you look at the front of the motor by the belts , try to peek down at the intake manifold and check for slight seapage to an obvious leak.
If its either of the Quad-4's they were notorious for heads warping or cracking.

Have the same problem, 96 grand am replaced hoses and still temp goes up like going to overheat.
I have a 1996 Grand Am Se that is overheating. I changed the thermostat a few weeks ago and the car ran fine for a few days. After the few days had past it seem like my car is overheating more now. I want to sell my car but I need to find out way it is overheating before I sell it. Could it has something to do with the water pump or transmission fluid sense I already changed the thermostat?
