As before there is no requirement to bleed the fuel system. After replacing the fuel filter, switch on the ignition and wait for about a minute. The system will automatically bleed itself.

Want to be on the safe side? attach a fuel pressure guage to the schrader valve and let gasoline exit the vent tube. It can save you a headache if the fuel system does not bleed itself properly. Air locked in the system causes starting problems and mechanics start gue$$ing with your money!

SOURCE: bmw 530d how to change fuel filter

You do not need to bleed it it just unscrews as it is a spin on type whichh is on the R/H side of the engine near the Wing and easy to see as you will also see the inlet fuel lines to it.
Just unscrew it slowly then carefully lift it out, not dropping any fuel. You do not need to fill the new Filter up with Fuel, just oil the outer large ring rubber gasket and the inner little one before placing the new one on. Just switch on the ignition to prime it for a few seconds and then start the car. It should stall on the 1st go or 2 but then will be ok. Just check for leaks and job done!!

I have a 2000 e39 530d and the fuse for the fuel pump keeps blowing in the boot even after i changed the pump and relays..what could it be??

do you have the correct size amp fuse in it ?if so then you probably have a wire grounding out somewhere on your frame from the fuel pump

Bmw 530d cranks over for 30 seconds before firing up, hot or cold

Try turning the ignition on (not to turn the engine over but only on) for 5 seconds and then off then repeat that three or four times then try and start it. If it starts up immediately after that then you have a fuel pressure problem and by doing this you are priming up the high pressure fuel rail. possible causes are a fuel filter blockage, if you dont know the history of the fuel filter then replace it, or could be a pump issue or a pressure regulator on the rail issue.
