You can be assured it is not the rings or cylinders if this
Is happening when car is parked with engine off which is diffently the only time you should check or add oil. Now if you push the accellerator to the floor when you are going up a hill and see a blue cloud in your review mirror it is time to have a pressure test of all cylinders to verify seals and rings are still working and no cylinders has melted.

Is the oil pouring on the ground as you add oil? If yes, the oil drain plug could be missing, or installed loosely; the oil pan could be damaged, the oil pan gasket could be broken or missing, the oil dipstick pipe could be loose where it meets the engine. Are you a first time car owner? Have you overfilled the engine with oil perhaps?

SOURCE: gas in oil!!

check the fuel pressure regulator, the diaphrams rupture causing fuel to be sucked into engine / you could have an head gasket that needs to be replaced. do a compression test on all cylinders i think you will find atleast 1 cylinder real low.

SOURCE: how can I be sure the starter is bad on my 1995

No, the noise is caused by the starter gear bouncing/not engaging on the cogs of the flywheel.

SOURCE: subaru impreza sport 1999 piston slap

Rebuilding the engine is the only true cure. Be sure that the engine warms up without driving it. In other words, don't put any excessive load on the engine while it is cold. Once it warms up, the piston, rings, pins, etc. will expand from the heat. This is why you only hear slapping when the engine is cold.
