There are times the a Odometer cable wares out and breaks or your speedometer broke. I would try changing the cable first it's cheaper.

SOURCE: speedometer and odometer not working in 89

If I'm not mistaken, there is a cable that goes to the side if the transmission that has a plastic gear on it. The gear sits on the end of the cable in the side of the transmission and the teeth can get broken off. It's a fairly cheap part and not too hard to fix with common tools. Call the dealer and see if you have this type of cable and get the repacement part from Advance Auto. I dont believe the 89's were electrically controlled. If so, you might have a bad speed sensor module.

SOURCE: i have a 1988 lebaron

The first thing to do would be to remove the cable at the trany and spin the inner part of the cable and see if speedometer moves a little, if it moves then you will know the cable is good and so is the speedometer and the problem is the gear in the trany, remove the small housing that the cable screws into amnd there you will see a gear, remove the clip and slide the gear off and replace it with a new one, you should be able to seee the gear teeth worn out,but is the speedo doesnt move when you turn the cable then the cabl may be bad, slide cable out by pulling it, and look for thee broken end. hope this helps.

Speedometer stopped working

You probably need a new speedometer cable. It may be too old of a car to try and find one from a salvager. They periodically send the older cars to be crushed.
The cables have been known to break apart after many years of service. It is connected at the transmission and behind the instrument cluster. You have to pull the cluster out part way and reach behind to unclip the cable from the back of the speedometer housing.

1985 Nissan 300ZX - Speedometer

Sounds like the problem is in the speedo head itself, in the dash. If fuild was leaking, I don't think the speedometer would work either? Sounds like the gear that turns the number wheels maybe bad or stripped.

Odometer doesn't work, is it something i can fix?

More than likely your lead gear for your odometer is spinning on the shaft and not advancing the odometer or tripometer. You will need to remove the speedometer from the cluster to verify. once the speedometer is removed you will find a metal/gray colored gear next to the odometer digits. Take a small flat tip screw driver while holding the odometer digits in place with your finger, try and spin the gear. If the gear spins this is your problem. OdometerGears.com has the three different sizes of gear for you to fix it.

My speedometer and odometer stopped working

Your speed sensor has failed. The vehicles speedometer is not cable controled, it's controled by a sensor in your transmission. It's a easy fix, but the new sensor is about $80 to $100 depending on where you get it.

1985 944 porsche speedometer stop working

There is a gear in the speedo that breaks. This is plastic gear on a metal shaft. The last fix I did was to remove speedo and open it up. I super glued the cracked gear to the shaft because I was unable to find a new one. It worked again with no future problems. I hope this helps.
