You thought it was a Phillips Screw

It is a Torx Screw like a T20 size, most likely

You also come across some metric hex at times,
so make sure it looks like a double hex, thus torx

SOURCE: 2001 FORD FOCUS SHIFTER CABLE SNAPED

You did not need to remove the heater box to replace the cable. There is a hole in the floor the cable passes through.

What is the Shroud on the steering column of a 2003 Ford Escape and what tool can I use to remove it

Steering column shroud is the plastic cover just below the steering wheel that tidies away from sight the switches, wiring and connectors beneath.

Most shrouds are sectional and held in place with a combination of partially hidden screws, disguised screws and internal clips. Some shrouds aren't sectional and the steering wheel must be removed as a first step towards removal.

Please be aware modern steering wheels have the airbag and beneath the shroud is the wiring and connections. It isn't wise to fool around in there unless you know what you are doing.

Turn switch

This car is very easy...Take the steering column plastic covers off and un-screw the switch and connector. The upper plastic cover on the column has a tiny screw from underneath that needs to be removed. It's a star head screw, I think a 4mm socket will get, maybe smaller. If I recall the screws that hold the switch in are torx. One of the screws is a pain due to tight space, I used a torx bit and an very small ignition wrench to turn it. But all in all, your lucky you don't have to deal with 3' of wiring harnesses to unhook and undo like some Chevy's.

High beams do not work

It is most likely the mulitfunction switch (turn signal switch) in the steering column. It's not too hard to replace as the steering wheel doesn't need to be removed. Take the covers off from around the column behind the steering wheel by removing the 3 screws with a torx bit. This will expose the switch which is held on with a couple torx screws also. Unplug the three connectors and then put the new part in. This is a common problem with Fords.
Hope this helps! :)

I've never done #2, and #1 refers to the panel below the steering column. To remove it completely, pull it towards the driver's seat. There may be retaining clasps on it also.

How do I remove the ignition tumbler on a 1992 Explorer?

  1. 1 Open the hood. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Peel back the insulator if equipped, and use the wrench to loosen the clamp nut on the negative cable.
  2. 2 Remove the covers on the steering column. Use the screwdriver to pull out the screws, and detach the knee bolster below the steering column. Pull out the screws and detach the lower cover to find the screw for the upper cover; then remove the upper cover in the same manner.
  3. 3 Remove the multifunction switch by pulling out its retaining screw and pushing on the release lever to detach the switch from the column.
  4. 4 Disconnect the ignition switch's electrical connector. Then detach the switch from the steering column by pressing on its clips to release the tabs.
  5. 5 Install the new ignition switch in the old one's place, making sure the locking tabs activate and the spring under the switch is in position on the column's locking rod. Connect the electrical connector.
  6. 6 Reconnect all other parts on the steering column in reverse order of removal. Replace the negative battery cable.
  7. 7 Insert your ignition key to test for proper operation in all three positions: "Lock," "Accessory" and "Start."

How do i install a blinker switch?

If you mean the flasher, the hardest part is finding it. It is usually under the dash near the driver but sometimes on the passenger side under dash. The book says yours is mounted to the steering column. To install, just pull it out or off the connector and push in new one.
