2002 Nissa Altima, first stalling now won't start

It started stalling even on a highway at 60mph. I then took it to Nissan and then ran diagnostics. They said the MAF is performing less than 50%. I managed to drive my car back home somehow. After I came home the car wouldn't even start any more, meaning the Starter is engaging the machine but it won't fire. I ordered the MAF and placed in the car. Same results.
I already know a list of things that can cause my problem but would you know exactly what I should look for?

Thanks

There is a sensor in the distributor that tends to cause this problem. The sensor is the called the camshaft position sensor and it is responsible for the ignition timing. If you have a timing light you can verify that the sensor is faulty by checking the timing while the engine is acting up. If the sensor is faulty, the timing will be erratic or just plain wrong. In many cases cleaning the sensor will correct the problem.

To clean the camshaft position sensor: Remove the distributor cap and rotor. This will give access to a metal plate that covers the sensor. Remove the screws the secure the plate and remove the plate. Inside there should be an optical sensor that you can clean using a spray type "Sensor Safe Air-Intake Cleaner". Eye protection is recommended when doing this.

Unfortunately, cleaning the sensor does not always fix the problem. In that case, the fix is to replace the distributor. Since the distributor is quite expensive and the problem could be something else, it is recommended that you use a timing light to check the ignition timing for any problems to confirm that the problem is the camshaft position sensor.

SOURCE: I have 95 Nissa Altima.

I have the same problem. Change all 4 spark plugs but before you do clean out the thread that holds the sparkplug when you screw it it using auto or house napkin. You also need to change your spark plug wires too. I change spark plugs at first anmd it helps a little so there was improvement. I then took out the spark plug wires and replace it with a new one. Walla...Fixed!! My wires was in pretty badshape and spark plug was rotten.

My 93 Altima will not start. I did the self diagnostic and got code 55?? It started a few weeks ago ran great for the weekend, got it to work and would not crank to go home.

Josh, Code 55 for your Altima simply means no faults were found/no malfunction. Do you mean car would not crank(engine not turning over) or did you mean engine will crank, but not start. I will post troubleshooting links to both conditions below. If not comfortable, have a good Technician look at it, diagnose and estimate repair.

If you turn the key and the starter motor makes the engine revolve then it is cranking or turning over. If that is all that it does then it is not starting. They are two different situations. I hope that you did not replace the "crank" as you stated it was a sensor issue. The problem with a diagnostic code is there is a piece that activates that sensor and that piece can be the problem. The codes are the same whether it is the sensor or the tone ring. Also there is a gap specification between the sensor and the tone ring. If it is too far away, the sensor wont see the magnet.

My 2005 pathfinder was having the same problem. Took it to the dealer and they told me that there was a re-call on a relay that goes to the ECU. They suggested a engine diagnostics. If it turned out to be the relay, the part/labor and diagnostics would be free. My pathfinder is running great now. Hope this helps.
