Golf mk3 1997 GTI - slow to start. Not sure if starter motor problem or a relay. Which is starter motor relay? Changed no 30 last year after problems with car cutting out. Starting problems occur when cold and have happened suddenly. thanks

    I am having problems with my 1988 Golf GTI starting, especially when it is cold. When it warms up slightly it can still take 3 attempts to get it started. Any ideas anyone ? it is driving me mad and I can not trust it to take to work incase I get stuck there !! Battery has been checked and no luck with that.

Weather gets cold starter will draw more cold crank amps! battery must be able to provide so check battery for load test if stands up then I would replace that power sucking starter this is what they do before they quit on you in summer it is un- noticeable cold snap plays it out well good luck and this is the ideal place to start!!John/toronto canada

I don't know what testing you have done, as far as wiring circuits? You can see the starter fuse in the diagram, not only check the fuse, check for voltage on the fuse circuit, use a test lite to check for voltage. At the starter motor itself, two voltage circuits, one hot all the time, the other goes hot when starter relay is energized. Check those voltage circuits. The starter motor grounds through engine block.
You can unplug starter relay, use proper jumper wire, between terminals 30 and 87, the starter motor should crank the engine. If you try that, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set.

First don't overfill sump it can do as much damage as low oil. The problem could be a defective sender unit or a short along the cable whch carries that signal. The worst it can be is worn engine parts in which case you should take it to a workshop. regards Johngee

To isolate your problem a few questions needed.
  • Do you hear any noise when you hit the switch
  • Does it move a bit
  • Can you operate it from the outside locking mechanism
If you can hear the motor (regulator) but window does not operate, then we established that power is being supplied and fuse/relay are ok. Your problem is a bad window regulator or a guide cable is fraying and caused it to knot up on the guides.

If you hear nothing at all then you first need to figure whether it's a fuse, a relay or the wiring is bad.

If as you say....Nothing is happening at all when you turn the key, you appear to have one of two problems. A faulty starter motor--or--- A faulty ignition switch. If you can tap the starter motor while another person keeps the key turned to the start position, and the engine now starts you now know it is a starter problem. When doing this PLEASE MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF GEAR.
If it should start up, or even engage the starter motor while IN GEAR, serious injuries could happen, and I do not mean to your car.

The only common faulf is that the heater motor resistor has burnt out or corroded due to a water ingress . The ac take a control feed from the first position resistor when the fan position 1 is selected . Regards VW Audi Tech
