Temp guage goes to max (right) when engine is cold.

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 w/ 5.2 L engine. Ran fine until a cold spell hit. Hard difficult time starting truck, check eng. light came on, and temp. guage was pinned to the far right> An idiot light "check guages" came on. The truck was still cold, not even at operating temp, yet guage suggests eng. was hot (not the cae). I let it run for an hour put High Octane gas with dry gas and F/I cleaner. Although this resolved cold starts, eng. light still on and gas cap is tight too!. The main problem I need help with is figuring out why I was able to remove radiator cap with engine running for over an hour. no pressure or overflow, no coolant leaks. Temp guage fluctuates affecting idle and throttle response, but low end torque is lost when guage max out to right (pinned) even when eng is cold from over night. Does not matter if key is in acc or "on" w runing eng. Not stuck in position either. When veh if off guage is at O zero (left). Anyone els have this issue?

The temp gauge on my 2008 ram 1500 jumps from normal temp to hot checked engine the temp is fine my heater them puts out cold air and I have no heat if I shut heater off and wait a few minutes temp gauge...

It probably low on coolant. The heater will blow cold when there is not enough water (coolant) to keep the heater core full. Check the radiator (not the overflow reservoir) when it's cool.

I had the same problem with my, 03, hemi. I did not wait 15 min. turn off and back on was all that was needed to reset, "red flashing light lower right hand ". though another 8 or 9 on off's, Engin Light also goes off, untill next time. All i did was pulled off my Air Intake box and hose, so i could get to butterfly on throttle bodie, sprayed carb cleaner in there. and it was very dirty. after put back togather, give it a few.... mine did not start right up, when it did idle real ruff even died few times...Once the computer re adjusted ran like it did when i bought it....that was 2 weeks ago, still no eng light, no flashing red ones either.

Correct installation of thermostat for 2004 dodge 1500, 4.7 engine, runs abnormally hot, just a tad over middle temperature range, after being run top hose very hot to touch, bottom hose cool, thanks in...

you know when its wrong the guage goes to the top, then drops.the temp guage is notoriously wrong on most cars,so if your not losing power, water, leave it.(the top hose is hot, about boiling point, the botom should be just warm)thats what the radiator does......

My son is telling me that the car can not be running more than 15 minutes before the gauge shows that it is hot... could it be the water pump or the thermostat

15 minutes is about right to heat up an engine, are you saying it's getting too hot? water/antifreeze level? water pump maybe. Start it from cold let it idle until it's hot, does the fan come on and the guage go down then the fan turn off? If it does and fluid levels are good it's working fine

Coolant temp sensor located on a 2004 dodge ram 1500 4.7

YOUR ENGINE OPERATING RATING TEMPERATURE SUPPOSE TO BE 190 TO 200 DEGREES. IF COOLANT SENSOR DEGREES IS SHOWING 190 OR 200 DEGREES IT WORKING.THAT RIGHT.IF ITS SHOWING 60 OR 80 DEGREES IT FAULTY. AND ENGINE WILL RUN POORLY.
