The first answer is correct how ever I have stuck that it's was corrosion between thermo fuses at battery terminal .. and another was break in main lead ??? Would get it to work by wriggling lead but took awhile to work it out.. also doubled up on Earth lead before I found it..

Need more info like when you say it won't start, Does it spin over? Is the engine turning over? If not, and a jump start does work, Then it is the Battery or the post connections. That's it! If it does not turn over with a jump then it will be the starter or ignition switch. If u can get to the starter, it can be forced on with a small jumper from the large post to the small stud (usually red)

SOURCE: I have a 2005 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. Sometimes it

I have a 2005 Jeep cherokee Laredo, and I have had this problem twice. Your key is some how not syncing with the factory alarm. The next time you put the key in the ignition and turn it look for a little flashing red dot (this dot should appear to the left beside the cooling/thermometer gauge) If this dot is flashing, it's indicating that the alarm is activated and until you deactivate it, you will NOT be able to crank your car. I had to have one of my co workers to drive me home to get my spare key and use it to disarm the alarm. I don't know what went wrong with my first key but for some reason it went bad, and as soon as I stuck the spare key in the ignition and turned it. The alarm was deactivated and the jeep cranked right up. I hope this will be of some help to you all that are having this problem, because I didn't know what was going on with my car when this first happened to me, and I know the feeling.

SOURCE: How do I replace my alternator on my 2005 Jeep

Here is what I suggest. Remove the battery from the vehicle and take it to an autoparts store. Most parts stores wll test the condition of the battery for free. They can tell you whether the battery is any good or not. Then, if you find the battery is bad and replace it, take the vehicle back to the autoparts store and have them check the alternator output. This is also a free service that most stores offer. That will give you peace of mind that both components are working properly. Really sorry for your trouble and best wishes.

SOURCE: Jeep Cherokee starting issue

On an intermittent start problem like this you may be having a starter solenoid issue or your wire on the starter from the key switch may be loose. Or you may have a corroded battery cable or the safety neutral switch may be going bad. Is it a automatic? If it were it would be the clutch safety switch going out. So do the simple things first. Clean cables like the first guy said if that does not fix it locate the starter and if you have jumper cables the next time it does it put the positive lead of the jumper cable on the Positive battery terminal and the other touch to the starter wire with the key in the run position where the big wire on the starter is, if you here it spin it means the starter motor is ok if it don't it is bad or the connection on the starter is loose. Also a bad battery cable could cause this from the battery to the starter next put a small wire into the end of the positive jumper cable and touch the S terminal on the starter if you here a solid clung it means the solenoid is good. So check the connections on the starter and tighten the starter bolts as they may have worked loose and don't have a good ground. So if you want more as stance just post on my question and I will hell p more and if this is more informative please rate

Sounds like you have a bad alternator. Not recirculating juice back to the battery.

There are 3 metal contacts on the front part of the starter, if you use 2 long screw drivers you can make contact to 2 of the contacts with one screw driver and use the second to connect the 3rd contact to the 1st screw driver (currently laid across 2 contacts) If the jeep starts it means that your alternator has gone bad and will not take over for the battery.
Before trying this be sure the key is in the ignition and it the run position.
Also be sure to use a screw driver with an insulated handle( do not use a bare piece of metal!!!!!!)

On another note if your dash lights are not coming on, you may have blown an interior fuse.

This is a normal condition I will explain why. Your vehicle has an ETC(Electronic throttle conrtol) which mean the is not a throttle cable. It is control by onboard computers in the vehicle. There is a delay sometimes because the ETC performs whats called a sweep test. turn the key to the on position for 2 seconds for it will then fire right up. I hope this info was helpfull please rate it.

Won't start sometimes

Hmm, sounds like starter. Next time it will not start, don't hold the key for almost a minute. Try turning the key several times if no luck, grabb a hammer and LIGHTLY tap on starter. If it turns over normally then, starter is going out.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Alternator issues?

have the alternator regulator and diodes tested. sometimes when the regulators fail they allow ac voltage to go to the battery. ac voltage doesn't charge the battery properly (causes it to deep cycle and shortens its life) and causes all sorts of funny problems with the car. also make sure the battery is secured properly, vibration isn't good for them at all.

when the jeep dies, do you have to jump start it? If the new battery is being drained, the alternator must not be charging properly and should be replaced. Countrycurt0
