Just did the rear brakes on a 2004 Chevy Venture, and after 90,000 miles there was little to no wear on the brake shoes, and the brake cylinders were completely retracted. Any ideas where to start looking?
I have already changed the brakes, this was one of the easiest rear brake jobs I have ever done, it just appears that the brakes are not working since the factory brake shoes had little wear on them after 90,000 miles and the cylinders were completely retracted, plus the drums came off extremely easy and show little to no wear.I have already changed the brakes, this was one of the easiest rear brake jobs I have ever done, it just appears that the brakes are not working since the factory brake shoes had little wear on them after 90,000 miles and the cylinders were completely retracted, plus the drums came off extremely easy and show little to no wear.

Try this push down on brake pedal while you push in or wiggle the hazard switch. If the brake lights come on then that means you turn signal switch is faulty.
first check brake fluid level
if fluid is low, this is a good indication that pads or shoes need replacing
check brake lings for wear
check that pcv valve from engine to brake booster is not clogged
to check this pull it out of valve cover and shake it
if it rattles it is good
if it dont rattle it is clogged, replace it
if pads and linings are good and no obvious signs of brake fluid leaking anywhere,(wheels cylanders etc>then the brake master cylander or brake booster is bad
more likely to be booster
The power to brake lightlights goes through the signal switch, have some one watch while you hold brake pedal and wiggle signal lever to see if lights come on, if they do then its a bad signal switch, also check to make sure the hazard button is not on, try turning on the 4way flasher and then try brake
The blocking bracket might be jammed. Stop the engine, nudge the car a little and try again to move the lever without pressing the brake pedal.
If this works move the lever several times to loosen the bracket, leave it in neutral, press the brake pedal and start the engine. Leave it running at idle for a while , till the oil heats up - 5-10 minutes , depending how cold is outside. Then repeat the lever movement till the efort becomes neglijable. If it doesn't or jams again take the car to the repair shop, it needs tinkering.
2 POSSIBLE PROBLEMS, STEERING SHAFT WEAR. MORE IMPORTANT SAFETY WISE IS THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS. EASY FOR A MECHAINC TO SEE AND SHOULD CHECK ON A LIFT FOR A MINIMAL CHARGE.
The rear brake shoes use a U clip to hold the shoes together. A simple solution to this change job is to change one side at a time.
Slowly unclip the U clip from the top of the shoe and remove the left shoe and spring. Replace the left shoe and reconnect the U clip, then do the same for the other shoe. Clean, adjust, and grease the self adjuster and you're done. Do the same for the other side of the van. If you take both sides of the clip off you're in for some heavy duty stretching with pliers unless you have the right tool.
