Reverse gear almost dead in 1998 Lantra auto..

My car is Lantra NOT Elantra. Reverse gear barely works in my 1998 1.8l Lantra, which seems odd with automatic transmission. Reverse only works if I rev very hard, and it goes as if the brake is on (and sometimes won't go at all). If I stop revving, its as if the brake has been suddenly applied.
Could this be a links/bands problem or soemthing else? Am I likely to need to replace entire transmission?

You have a bad O-ring seal in the valve body of your transmission. The reason you barely move when you rev high, is because the trans fluid isnt going to the correct part of the valve body due to the bad seal. This should be a repair you can do yourself if you have any mechanical experience, OR a transmission shop may be able to rebuild the valve body for you.

Ive replaced clutch and gear lever cables but it still is stiff going down throught the gears also had new gearbox on a j2 lantra

1. replace your gear oil.
2. is this an automatic or manual transmission engine? if manual, adjust your clutch release a little higher than usual to let your clutch engange earlier.

Hyundai Lantra 1994

After some extensive research, it looks as though they have two totally different body styles as well as a few others. The differences are as follows:

Lantra: 1.5L
Elantra: 1.6L or 1.8L engine sizes

Lantra: 2,336 lbs
Elantra: 2,500lbs Weight

Lantra: 11.89 gal
Elantra: 13.7 gal fuel capacity

those are only three differences that i have put up among the many that i have found. Lantra's also seem to be one of those out of states type cars that you find in Australia mostly. The body is also totally different.
