I just purchased a very nice 2001 XJ8. While driving at highway speed last night the engine cut power to a very low output causing me to make an emergancy turn off the interstate. The warning screen on the dash read "Engine Failsafe Mode - Trans Fault". The vehicle would not go faster than 10mph. I had to pull over and stop. I shut the vehicle off and then started it back up. The warning lights did not come back on and the vehicle returned to normal operation. I was able to drive it at highway speeds again without issue. I am worried tha this will re-occur when I leave this vehicle for my kids to drive. I am in the military and leaving Friday. Any ideas?
Probably, your ZP HP-series transmission has failed. You didn't mention your car's mileage but failure is common from 60K - 120K miles. The "lifetime" synthetic fluid accumulates metal dust beyond the filter and magnet's ability to capture it, and sudden and catastrophoic failure occurs. Find a good independent shop (check your local Jag club) and they'll replace the transmission for around $6,000. The dealers charge twice that.
The other possibility is failure of the secondary cam chain tensioners. If you hear a clattering sound when you start the car, turn it off immediately and have the car transported to a good Jag shop. They can replace the plastic tensioners with metal ones for around $3,000. (Rough guess.) Make sure they do the same with the plastic primary tensioners and chain guides, and replace the chains. Failure to take this step after you hear the first symptoms will result in engine failure.
Also replace the plastic water pump and thermostat with alloy units.
Sorry for this bad news. I own a 2001 XJR and it is a fabulous car. It's still a Jaguar, though, and you're going to have to put a few thousand into it. Since these cars are selling for next to nothing on the used market ($12,000 for 80,000 miles), I consider preventive maintenance of $5,000 or so to be part of the investment in a world-class sedan.
First of all he has a 2001 they changed the plastic chain tensioners in 2000 to the medal 1s so he don't have the plastic 1s. It is his throttle body they all do it I have a 2000xjr without the plastic tensioners and it did the same thing every 300 or so miles turned out to be a throttle body problem it is a Mercedes Benz transmission that is real strong and when it fails u will know so don't listen to this guy up here trying to make u spend 5-6000$ on a 01 jag when that's what it's worth get a new throttle body for 500$ and you will be all set they been trying to get jaguar to recall this issue but they don't want to hear it.First of all he has a 2001 they changed the plastic chain tensioners in 2000 to the medal 1s so he don't have the plastic 1s. 1998 Jaguar XJ8 won't rev over 3000 rpm ... engine cuts out and shudders at 3000 rpm won't accelerateobd code p0332 2002 jaguar x type 3.0 l P0332 - Knock ... Car is boging out in park and will not go over ... driving, don't worry about it.
hot engine, cold or both? hot is 180F+ !
ticks = idle speed, (very old name for idle, but im very old)
low idle speed has many causes. (over 50 in fact)
but has 3 modal causes:
1: ISC valve stuck. (idle speed control valve) clean it?
2: in limphome mode, suzuki cuts idle controls then. suzuki name officiall for this is Failsafe mode, CEL glowing , is it?
the check engine light on? ( ignored?)
3: engine power way to weak even egr valve stuck open.
#3 has vast causes... huge? we do simple tests to avoid guessing all 50.
this is pure physics:
engine weak, or idle controls dead.
do tell if engine has full power up hills. (kinda key that)
do tell if you press throttle its easy to get normal 800 rpm. or more.
cheers !
700 is a generic transmission code. It went to limp mode, that's why it drives like it does. Have the codes read with a newer /better code reader or a scanner. Find out what other codes are in there.
You might try to have your battery tested. The Anti-theft system reacts to low battery voltage and automatically reduces the Voltage to the starter so it will not turn over or turn over fast enough to start; thereby defeating thieves.
Failsafe usually is an extreme heat sensor mode which deactivates some of the cylinders so the engine exhausts excess heat through the exhaust valve. This is why top speed is limited and power is reduced. The deactivated cylinders act like air compressors, they have no fuel charge, and thereby draw air into the cylinder and expel heated air.
JUST SAW, the most common cause of your engine dying and backfiring while driving on highway would be low fuel pressure. check fuel filter for foreign debris. filter may be clogged or restricted, also a weak fuel pujmp. the other thing could also be a stuck e.g.r. valve, this would have some exhaust carbon deposit stuck on the seat of the valve producing a vacuum leak, but it would not idle properly.faulty fuel pump would give you a good engine idle but would starve for fuel at high highway speeds, when the engine needs for fuel for proper operation.
fail safe mode is something the vehicle computor will go into when there is a problem with the vehicle it allows u to get off the highway or road safely you need to take vehicle to repair shop or your dealer which ever u prefer
Failsafe engine mode on a 2000 jaguar s type is caused by a stopped up throttle body. Jaguar says not to clean the throttle body since it has a protective coating to help keep deposits from accumulating. You can clean the throttle body as long as you use ONLY throttle body cleaner that states it is safe to use with a protective coating. The butterfly valve in the throttle body will actually stick not allowing air to flow into the manifold causing failsafe engine mode to kick in reducing the amount of power your engine will produce. To solve the issue just clean out your throttle body, it will cost you around $5 dollars and take 1 hour of your time.
