I dont know how much help this will be, but I'll offer it and let you be the judge.

Ive had this issue before in a different GM vehicle, a Pontiac Grand Prix. The issue turned out to be that the voltage from the battery was low due to corroded terminals. Once that was cleaned up and the voltage restored to normal, the key came out. Come to find out that this was a common issue in that vehicle, voltage goes low, you cant remove the key.

Now, on my vehicle and since yours is a GM product as well I will assume it will hold true for your vehicle too, there is a small hole on the bottom side of the column right in the area of where the ignition key cylinder is. If you have this, you can take a small tool like an allen wrench and push it up in there and that will press on a release mechanism that should allow you to turn the key back to its release position and pull the key out.

Hope this helps.

Could be simple.

Make sure the gear selector is all the way in park....sometimes the linkage gets fouled up or bent and causes that.

Or your key teeth are wearing down.

Another solution may work if you spray a very short burst of WD-40 into the key hole, get a new key made from the old one and see if that does it?

Dont try to force it. USe the wiggle method (wiggle key up and down, not just in and out).

Of course your ingnition key switch could have a bad spring and worn out?

Good luck,

Thanks,

Mark

I ran into the same problem ..... the fix was make sure selector was all the way in park. If it didn't lock in park (it showed in park but didn't lock) I couldn't take the key out but I could turn the vehicle all the way off.

Try to turn the s/wheel in the direction of the front wheels and giggle the key.; sometimes the front wheels push against the steering wheel and bind the key lock mechanism. good luck

Fuel guage goes to empty as i turn key to start engine 2001 gmc jimmy no start

Sounds like you have a bad ignition switch, not the lock cylinder but the switch itself. Electrical power should continue to go to the gauges and to the ignition module even with the key in the Start position.

GMC jimmy key stuck in ignition, steering column will not lock, electrical system working

It sound like your shifter linkage is worn and your ignition interlock is not making it into the park position. I'm not 100% sure on jimmies but my GMC Sierra could be adjusted on the steering column under the hood. It's just a rod through an eye with a bolt. Put the transmssion in park and loosen the bolt and twist the column until the indicator is in park, retighten the bolt.

I have a 95 gmc jimmy and it does not start . put a new batt and starter . still get nothing when i turn the key can it be the ignition mod. or does this truck have a main fuse for the ignition???

There is an ignition switch located under the dash on your steering column that you may want to check. Listen for an electric switch click when you turn the key on, if you do not hear that then replace this switch.

Can't turn key to start car on 2001 jimmy

Have you tried to turn the stearing wheel side to side while turning the key? Sometimes the wheel gets bumped and it locks with the key in the ignition and the added tension won't alow you to turn key unless you turn the wheel from one side to the other.

2000 Jimmy , put in park , turn off key & key wont come out of ignition.

Does the transmission work in all 4 gears? I've seen bad ignition switches cause this. Not the ignition lock cylinder, the electrical switch.
