SOURCE: how to change front rotor on 4wd 2004 canyon

The rotors bolt in from behind the hub and bearing assembly, very bad design! GM states you have to remove the steering knuckle, the bolts from the hub assembly, then the ABS sensor ring, then the rotor bolts and it will come off. To re-assemble, install the knuckle in the truck, bolt the rotor to the hub assembly, then the ABS part, then install on knuckle.

A long, drawn out procedure, takes 5 hours to change both rotors if you know what you're doing. Get a manual if you're going to try and tackle this job, it's a PITA.

    SOURCE: abs

Disconnect the positive lead on battery wait about 30 seconds and reconnect. Take it out somewhere where you can floor it and go through the gears a couple times. This will clear error lights and establish a new acceration curve. If the error comes back then start looking for loose connections or alignment problem for abs stuff.

How do I get the front brake rotor off of a 2006 GMC Canyon 2 WD?

    Tools Required:

    Lug Removal Tool
    Impact Gun(Recommended)
    Sockets.. Lots of metric sockets
    Ratchets
    Wrenches
Porta Power(hydraulic piston) --- THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT... use to press hub off..
    LOTS OF PATIENCE

    Instructions:

    1) Jack vehicle and support on jack stands.

    2) Remove front tire.

    3) Remove Front Brake caliper.. hang on frame using a bungee or other support
    Important to not stress hose.

    4) Remove brake pad support.

    5) Remove 4 bolts from rear of hub.

    6) Undo bolt for ABS sensorfrom frame, undo all clips holding wire.
Crawl under truckand unclip wire connector(trace wire from the ABS sensorto find it)

    7) Make sure wire is unclipped from the frame and will not bind on removal of hub. (Prevents Damage of ABS sensor)

icon_cool.gif.pagespeed.ce.l5kzkvpb-u.gifTRICKY PART: Turn the wheels so that you can use the hydraulic porta-power against where the lower control arm mountsto the front. (Turn the
wheel left). Position porta-power to be placed inside dimple of the middle of the hub. DO NOT DAMAGE ABS SENSOR...
Pump Porta-power until hub "Pops".. be extremely careful removing the hub not to damage the ABS wireat all.. It is easy to break and not notice (I did
this and had to resplice it)

    9) Hub should be removed from vehicle by this point and you can remove the six bolts holding the old rotor on. Still be careful not to damage the sensor.

    10) Change the rotor. (do not use impact gun to reattach.. may strip threads)

    11) Installation is basically reverse of removal.

    12) Install brake pads, press caliper back in (typical brake job)

    13) Put tire back on.. do other side.. and you're done.

Hi, I'm trying to change the rotors on a 2006 GMC Canyon and we can't seem to get the piece in front of the rotor off. Is there a schematic for them?

Is the piece you are referring to the piece that holds the brake pads? If so there should be two larger head bolts behind that piece that holds it on to the front axle.

I replaced my brake rotors on a 2004 gmc canyon and installed new brakes. everything works great, however my abs light stays on now.

IF you installed the wrong brake rotors, without the ABS reluctor ring[if equipped],the light will come on.Second possibility is you damaged the ABS wiring to the wheel speed sensor. There is a harness to each wheel.

My brake rotor is mounted behind the wheel hub on my 2004 GMC Canyon 4WD pickup. How do I remove the hub so I can get the rotor off? Tks.

Your going to hate this answer. The wheel hub has to come off. This brake system was designed by Isuzu. Don't know what else to say, it's a lousy job.
