The ASR (acceleration slip regulation) light is for the ETA (electronic throttle actuator) it is a mysterious beast that controls throttle placement. I would say that you have one of two problems. Either the interior insulation of the wiring of the ETA is is crumbling or the wiring harness is disintegrating. Either fix isn't cheap although if I had to pick one I'd pick the wiring harness. It's about a third of an ETA. In short check he wiring to the ETA, look for damage or water intrusion, if nothing is found you will have to replace the ETA control.
READ THIS POST FROM A M-BENZ FORUM MEMBER ON ASR ISSUE
For two years I lived with the the ASR light coming on shortly after starting the car and had to either continue driving it in the limp home mode, or stop the car to restart it to regain normal engine operation with the ASR light out. Finally, it got so bad I simply took a chance, after discussing the problem with a reputable local indie, and bought a rebuilt ETA from Potomac German Auto and put it in. The part had a one year warranty with it and was about half the cost of a new unit from MB. There are other companies out there that rebuild these units as well. At any rate the ASR problem went away. To give you a reference point, my car had about 156,000 miles on it when I did this repair. That may or may not be significant to your situation, and I probably should have corrected this problem well before I did, but I didn't.

To make sure the problem will be solved, you have to replace left and right ETA's and engine wiring harnes.I had the same problem with my 1994 S600. expensive.Mercedes had wiring problems on all models from 1992- 1996 (insulation on wires would crack, and wires would short circut).

Could Trac Off quickly displaying on my dash result in car losing power and having knocking noise?

no information generic answer the trac off is just one of the limp mode lights-- losing power means your in limp mode probably because of the knocking noise need to have vehicle scanned for trouble code[s] or if knocking can be bad gas -overheating or if from lower part of engine might be terminal [blown] engine

90's Mercedes ASR light on issue

In the 1990's the ASR system was introduced into Mercedes Benz. Traction control was a great feature but now these systems are aging and giving people hard times with the "limp home mode".

First is a simple check. Sometimes the accelerator cable becomes bound or tight. As holding the gas pedal down from the hood while starting will initiate the ASR limp home mode condition back off the adjustment to put just a little slack in the cable. This will allow no tension at start up and allow light not to come on. Lubrication of the cable is a great idea at this age also.

There is also a speed sensor on the front drivers wheel behind the hub that should be removed and cleaned to provide accurate wheel speed and let the system operate correctly. Also in most MB's of thiese years there is another sensor in the rear end that reads rear axle speeds for proper traction control. This unit is better replaced than cleaned due to the high use and heat from exhaust and milage involved.

If you have been to push the gas pedal to start your car there are other issues involved than ASR and you should look into your ignition parts or fuel delivery system.

I hope my tip helps those with this problem.

ASR LIGHT IN 600 V12 MERCEDES 94. WHAT TO DO. I REWIRE BOTH ETA,S .REWIRE ANY BAD WIRING I SEE. BUT STILL THE LIGHT IS ON WHEN I START THE CAR WITH NO POWER AND HARD ACCELERATOR. I DID NOT TRY TO CHANGE...

You should not have an OVP relay. Few things to check. Find your computer for the ASR and see if the fuse is blown on it. Also make sure there is slack in the accelerator cable, if it is snug it will initiate a limp home mode. Also replace all barrel fuses with copper ended fuses and clean corrosion out of the fuse box. When you find the ASR module if the fuse is good in it and with all that does not reset it, replace module and check rear end sensor and front wheel speed sensors.

Asr limp home MB 600

Model years 93 and 94 have the L.H. type fuel injection system. There is also e.z.l.(ignition),a.s.r.(acceleration slip regulation-traction)i.s.c.-c.c.-e.a.(idle speed control, cruise control and electronic acuater),d.m.(diagnostic mod.)and the base module. With a v-12 there is 2 of everything exept base and d.m.. the d.m. mod. overlooks the entire system and the base supplies voltage to the computers. This system is complicated and difficult to diag. Most likley one of your electronic acuaters is faulty. That is your throttle motor. These era vehicles have wire harness issues. Have the car ran for codes starting with the d.m.. at least this vehicle will store faults-the light does not have to be on to read the fault. More than likley you will find an e.a. code. You can have these motors rebuilt for about 1/4 the cost of a new one. Also never attempt to raise idle at one of the actuaters because if they are not both moved at the same time you will lose throttle synchronization and have to have the memmory cleared and resynch. motors. It will cause the exact symptoms like you described-also when the pigtail harness wires short and the modules lose the throttle synch. Good luck

Just had ac repairs done on 1994 Mercedes 500SL. After I picked it up from shop, the ASR system is active, and by the time I got it home, the CHECK ENGINE light is on, too. Any suggestions?

turn off car and unscrew the throttle cable a little bit then start it up again. ASR is finicky if it feels pedal is being depressed on startup it goes into "limp home" mode.
Have you had your engine upper and lower wiring harness replaced? From 1991-1995 MB was forced to use a biodegradable insulation that went bad under the hood due to engine heat.

94, MB. Dash light ASR.

From what you said the car goes to LIMP HOME mode and that is ASR issue that can't be solved by connecting your car to the computer and having the issue pinpointed. ASR can't be tested. You will have to replace engine wiring harnes FIRST part # 140 540 47 05 buy on line or on EBAY cost is about $610.00, check the performance of your car, if you lucky then this it. But from my experience next to replace is a left ETA (if not two of them) to fix this problem they are VERY EXPENSIVE about $4000.00 ea. ETA Left # 000 141 72 25 and right # 000 141 39 25. Word of advice DON"T BUY ANY OF THE ABOVE MENTION PARTS USED, remove your own ETA's from the car and call BBA Remanufacturing Inc. @ 866-573-2740 (www.bba-reman.com) they can rebuild your own ETA's at about $300.00 ea plus shipping. The work is guaranteed. After replacing above parts the car will run like new. No ASR issues for next 10-15 years. So far I find this as a number one issue with Mercedes S600. Good luck.
