SOURCE: cant get the car to drive in gear

We had the same problem and I found this post on the web and it worked! Our car finally wouldn't go forward or reverse and I read a lot of posts saying that even replacing the transmission didn't fix the problem. We just pulled the sensor off today and are trying to find a new one but the car DRIVES now. Thank you to whoever posted this solution. 15th Jul 2007, 21:04 Bought my wife a 99 Ford Taurus at auction. Like others the Transmission sensor gave out. A temporary quick fix is to open the hood, and simply pull off the sensor connector plug on top of the transmission. The transmission will now operate properly in both OD and drive. You will notice your rpm's are steady as your speed goes up - loss of fuel economy due to the failed sensor ( to technical to explain here...). Two things to do: Change out the old transmission fluid immediately - its gonna require synthetic fluid at a higher price, but is worth it as it shifts far better now. And change out the coolant. In fact, I suggest changing out ALL of the fluids and start clean. Until you get the sensor replaced your fuel economy will **** for a while, but its better than not having wheels at all and it IS safe to drive.

SOURCE: Ford Escort 1997 Problems shifting gears

the speed sensor is located on the passenger side of the transmission , it has a 2 wire connector and is held down by 10mm bolt and clamp , sometimes the sensor will get stuck in the transmission when trying to remove it . persistence and a little WD-40 will help !

SOURCE: Ford Focus 2002: won't go into gear.. any gear

If it's a standard, you may need a new clutch. If it's an automatic, you may need new clutch plates. They wear out over time. I had an old Saturn with an automatic tranny, and when I would shift into reverse it wouldn't go into gear unless I revved it a bit, then it would clunk and drop into gear.. Not very healthy for the car, your tranny may need a rebuild.. Hope your piggy bank is full.

It sounds like the torque converter clutch is not working from either bad oil in the transmission or jammed servo/ solenoid. Run fault codes and see if there are faults with the wiring (Connections) the converter clutch and the TCM

Both turn signals on my 1998 Ford Escort zx2 don't flash.

The 98 Escort is actually a Mazda 323 with Ford trim. It uses a solid state flasher relay for both turn signals and hazard lights.
The relay is behind the speedometer. My guess is the relay has died.
You can look it up online or check with your local auto parts store to get a visual.

Slips Out of first

I assume your talking standard shift transmission and the gear shift jumps out of 1 gear. You need a transmission job.

My Ford Escort van W reg. which I have just purc hased has problems with stiff gears particularly into reverse.

One of the most common causes of hard shift is the clutch no fully disengaging, also do you put it in 2nd before you try 1st or reverse, it helps stop gear motion in the trans which eases the effort to engage the non-synchro gears, which first and reverse are most likely.
