So, I dealt with this problem on my own. It would have cost me over $350 to change a stinking bose speaker in my A4, instead, it cost my $62.50 and a saturday afternoon.
Here were my symptoms:
On really cold mornings or days, my passenger side front door speaker would crackle, not exactly blown per se, but it was really annoying, making me adjust my balance 100% to the right side. But, when it warmed up a little later in the day, the crackling would go away. I'm guessing this had something to do with expansion and contraction due to heat, or lack thereof.
Here's what I did:
I called around and found out that you can buy replacement speakers from the audi parts shop at your local dealer... they said it would cost $178.00 for one speaker! I understand it's Bose, but come on, it went defective on me. So, just like you said, I checked ebay. I was able to get, not one, but two used replacement speakers for 60.00. But I was concerned about dismantling my door panel. I've been in a lot of cars where the interiors rattles because of custom or even professional installation jobs. I didn't want to lose my wonderfully noise free interior in my car. I figured I need some directions: I checked the internet and found this site: carstereoremoval.com. What do you know? They give you simple step by step instruction on how to remove a door panel on a 2001 A4. It cost me $2.50 through paypal. So total, (besides the torque wrench), 60.00 + 2.50 = 62.50 vs. 350.00. That's a lot of beer money! Hope this helps someone else out.
Be forewarned: To replace the bose speaker you need a T20 torque wrench. I didn't have this and was caught having o drive to home depot without a door panel.
SOURCE: Change the Front indicator on an Audi A4 2001
Take out the two Torx bolts on top of the headlight assembly. Then there is a third hidden bolt. Look through the holes in the top front of the fender, above and behind the headlight's turn signal portion (you'll probably need to shine a light in there) and you'll see the third bolt. Remove that and the headlight pulls straight forward and out. Then you can change the bulb.
