Tensioner making high pitched squeak while eng is running.

at night, it is cold, your drive belt gets worn other time, when it's cold at night it doesn't get much grip, so it squeaks, what you can do is tighten it up, find which one is loose by pressing on them. The concept of belt tensioning is simple, look it up, on all cars work the same.

check for play in the distributor sometimes the slop will make the pick up window under the cap will hit the distributor cap , the squeaking noise may be your belt or tensioner pulley bearing the knock can also come from a bad tensioner as well .

If you take the belt off and there is no noticeable in/out, up/down, or side to side movement of pulley and there is no noise when rotating, a new belt may be all you need. Make sure you check ALL of the other belt driven components including idler pulleys and belt tensioner pulley. A worn tensioner can squeak also.

Recheck the tension as new belts stretch slightly. If you have a multi groove pulley check the tension setting. Check your tensioner pulley -- if you do not have enough tension on the serpentine belt, it will slip on the pulleys and cause a squeaking noise (very loud and high pitched). if you push on the serpentine belt with your hand, it should not more more than about an inch -- if it does, you are low on tension. If it does not have any give at all, then you have too much tension, and one of your pulleys might not be turning properly, causing that same noise. If your tension is right, and your car is still making that noise ... and belt dressings (the spray you probably used) are not working to stop it, then it might be a piece of rubber stuck on one of the pulleys, but this usually will not make that sound ... just smoke and a burned rubber smell.

i have a similar problem. a squeaking noise, sounds when i start the engine, and when i stop the engine. at times it comes when the engine is running and idle, and it lasts some time like a high pitched whistle. Ive had several mechanics look at it, and it seem to be one of the smaller pulleys that the belts run around. in the 2002 model (petrol) of the crv the belts are not the cam belts, becuase this model has a cam chain (much more robust!). so they all said its nothing to worry about. you can try having your pulley replaced.

Take a bar of soap at touch it on the side of belt when it is running. Becareful!!! or spray some WD40 on it. Should stop it. If not it must be something wrong with whatever it is running. If that is a serpentine belt spray it. Soap is good on v-belts.

Occasionally this will happen. Here are a few tricks to hush the noisy belt. Try using another belt from another manufacturer. Its true you do get what you pay for. A better belt may be the ticket. Another trick is to lightly score the idler pulley with a file all the way around in a cross pattern then lightly sand the pulley to rough up the surface. If changing the belts didn't stop the problem, it may be a pulley that is making the squeak, not the belts. When belts age, they tend to form a glaze on the contact surface, which can cause slippage, or squeak, or squeal, also if engine fluids get on the belt due to leaks or spillage, it can cause a problem. If you feel it's definitely the belt(s) making the noise, check the belt tensioner for wear. There is usually an indicator (stamped on the tensioner) that shows if it is in need of replacement. If that's the case, it would not keep the belt(s) tight, and could cause them to slip and squeal. Let me know what you find, or if you have further questions. Curt

Had this problem with a mitsubishi and it was partly because the belt was either to loose or tight. The main problem was a broken engine mount allowing the engine to move.
