Car keeps overheating.

The car would only overheat at traffic lights, but be fine when driving, so I thought it was the fans. Checked and the fans work alright. Then we noticed it was leaking water from a hose leading to the thermostat, so we replaced two hoses leading to the thermostat. Then noticed the thermostat housing was cracked, so we got a new thermostat, gasket and thermostat housing. Now its leaking from the thermostat housing and still overheats, and we cant figure out why.

SOURCE: my car was overheating and antifreeze was leaking

most likey if you changed the thermostate and gasket and antifrezze and water your fan clutch has gone bad an needs to be replaced the clutch works on a friction device the hotter it gets the more the friction plates ingauges causeing the clutch to turn much faster thush cooling the engine. Without this cooling action this will destroy the engine and trans misssionsdm without this cooling so this is true to this date the cooling in fan fan has to work to be able to keep engine cool. now days they call it a puke tank to keep from burning up the engines and is designed so that hot water is pushed out of the tank into the overflow tank so that when it gets hot there us bo waiting for the fluid to be sucked intothe radiator it's done automatically and saves the engines. So small changes have stuck with us and saved the lives of people in the miliatry and in the non milataray systems..

SOURCE: 2003 hyundai elantra gt overheat

If the upper radiator hose is cool, but the engine is overheated than this could be a sign that the thermostat is stuck. By the way, the thermostat is at the end of the upper hose in the metal housing. There are two bolts holding it to the engine.

Only 2 parts remaining are the thermostat and waterpump. Always start with the thermostat when diagnosing an overheating problem. If the car is overheating constantly under all conditions and coolant is backing up into the reservoir, it's very likely to be the thermostat. If it only overheats at low speed or idling, it's more likely the waterpump.

SOURCE: why is my 1998 hyundai accent overheating?

The head gasket has gone so pressure builds up in the cooling system and forces water out of the overflow

You need someone to take the head off , skim it and fit a new gasket

My guess is that your electric fan is NOT operating at all. Under normal conditions, just going down the highway, your cooling system will function just fine without a fan running. The air flow through the radiator is adequate to keep things cool. However, when you stop, you quickly get into an "overheat" situation. Actually, you should be able to hear your fan begin operating when your engine temperature starts climbing or your air conditioner requires the fan to do its thing. Note: If you've ever severely overheated your engine, your problems may be worse than just a fan not running, but you really do need to confirm whether your fan is operating correctly, or not. Another note: I had a vehicle with a tendency to overheat when stopped. It turned out to be a faulty (leaking) pressure cap on the cooling system.

Car overheat when first run turn car off and back on and car run cool

You might need to replace fan assembly and/or thermostat. Mine was overheating only when stopped at traffic lights. Only one fan was working and would cause the car to overheat. Working great after fan swap.

Temp gauge goes way up to the danger zone, but not quite overheating, if I don't have the A/C on. Checked coolant level, it is fine. When driving it rises, when idling in goes to normal.

Possible wiring from sensor ( need to verify it is overheating, with Thermal Gun or probe) if it is overheating, check Fan operation and possible radiator restriction ?

Ford Escort 1.9L - The fan for the radiator does not come on and the car overheats. I have checked the fuse & its fine and there is water/coolant in the radiator. What can it be?

if the car is overheating whist driving it normally and not sat in traffic then it could be as simple as the thermostat needs replacing, are you using water if so your head gasket could have gone as for the fan the temp sensor could have gone unplug it and short the connections on the wiring the fan should start up ( ignition on) if it does replace the sensor

I have a 1997 ls400 and the temperature gauge goes up when I'm stuck in traffic or sits at a traffic light but not when I'm driving...

This may not be an actual problem, but rather it is likely normal. What is important is do the cooling fan(s) come on, and when they do, does that stop the heating up?
If fans work properly, are you making ENOUGH temperature? have you replaced the thermostat, lately? My thought is for generating enough heat, and not causing the overheating.....although the thermostat certainly can make overheat, I just doubt it in your case.
