I have been driving over 250 miles each way a week for the past few months and for the past month, my car will shut down once I near my destination and slow down under 20 mph or so. The check engine light comes on, I lose power steering and after coming to a stop, can turn the car back on. The engine shuffles a bit for 10 or 15 seconds and then the odometer sets on 1000 rpm and it sounds normal again. Until I get up and go and then stop again. On my last trip, this happened 7 or 8 times. Today, it didn't happen at all. Feels like a significant safety hazard, but there is no check engine light on, unless it shuts down.
Hi Cade
You are driving a possiable dangerous car as you have said Hazzardous yes, if it stopped on you and your on the Hiway you may have an accident. Therefore my opinion is it maybe your computer, crank and cam sensors, 02 sensors you may have 3 or more, your throttle position sensor or switch, your gas filters, dirty airfilters dealer can read codes and trouble shoot more precise BMW nice car needs maintence. You dont want to take any chances but you can try replacing airfilter gas filter is a good start.

I tend to disagree with the cam-sensor, but more along the lines of the crank, however before doing any of this one must check the engine codes.
Check www.kijiji.com for a local mechanic to do this for you for 10 or 20 bucks. Otherwise you may replace a lot of sensors.
There are specs for the resistance values of each sensor to test it's contacts but without the specs you may not know what to look for.
There is a code reader available for bluetooth devices and android phones called the ELM327, available on ebay from 5 to 10 bucks and solve this and any future issues with codes from OBDii compliant vehicles or newer than 1994 I believe it is.
Please give us feedback on this.
Before replacing any parts check all fuses, wiring for frays especially around the fuse/relay box under the hood, take your time and look with a light for wires touching the hotter engine parts...
I agree with buddy though about the fuel pump.
This is what it sounds like to me, or bad crank or map sensor lol.
Good luck.

your camshaft position sensor may be going bad. usually with an old car it tend to go bad. The top of sensor can be covered or gumed up with grease, oil, dirt and cause it not to detect the flywheel turning. Camshaft sensor send single to your DME to deliver fuel and sparks to you engine. If camshaft sensor goes bad it will seem like your fuel pump and ignition coil is bad even-though they are good. Faulty camshaft sensor may caused you to have this issue and problems such as sometime it run good and all of sudden it shut off, sometime its start good and others time is doesn't start. Once the sensor goes bad, the car will not run. There are two Sensor one for the fuel and one for the sparks, I would replace both sensor because soon or later if it will go bad, it will leave you stranded although if you replace one you might as well replace the other. Check the coil and test using the light or volts tester to see you getting power to the coil, next check if your fuel pump is working, fuel pump will not stay running unless the sensor sense the flywheel is turning from your camshaft sensor. next time when your car does not start, check if you getting spark and fuel. Both sensor will cost you around 130 bucks. assuming your DME, fuel pump, coil, wires, etc... is working. keep me update and I will try to walk you through. btw stop by at any auto part store and pick yourself up Haynes auto repair book for your car, its a great tools and investment to have for your next repair work if you plan to keep your car and get to know the heart of it. good luck and i hope that help some.

Your oil is a little low, and the timing may be off a bit but if it smooths out after warm it is probably ljust
low oil.

Sounds like a fuel problem , have you changed the fuel filter in a while ? could be the knock sensor or the knock sensor module needs to be replaced.

Sounds like you have a small bit of dirt or grit in the fuel system when accelerating it is drawn with enough force to cut off the fuel supply then is released when engine at Idle.
1 run liquid fuel line/injector cleaner in 1 tank
2 check fuel lines for debris
3 change fuel filters
4 have fuel tank flushed
here is trouble shooting order less expense to greater.
