My 2000-model Toyota Celica runs fine with only 80.000 km, but the last month I've noticed it isn't running completely clean on idle.
The engine sounds OK most of the time, but about once every 4-10 seconds it sounds like it skips a cylinder or four. The engine kind of "coughs" silently and I can see the RPM dropping just a couple of hundred.
Should I replace the spark plugs? I've followed every service, the last one at 75.000 km. Are they perhaps scheduled for replacement at 100.000 and failing early, because of the age of the car?
Everything on the car is original or replaced by the local Toyota dealer, but I'm curious about the Pulstar spark plugs. Not my main concern, though. First I want my car to run properly.
Changes on idle can be for multiple reasons, including type off gas related to climate or temperature, winter blend in summer or vise versa, if your engine is burning some oil wich all 1.8 do, then have them inspect and replace has needed, also your air mass flow sensor collects dirt over time specially if you run an aftermarket air filter, clean it , all of this if no check eng lite on, other wise refer to codes first.
SOURCE: 1988 Celica GT Cold start problem and smoke on startup
blue smoke is evidence of oil burning and is most likely valve seals. this can be done on most cars with head still on by applying air to the cylinders this keeps valves up while spring is removed
SOURCE: 1990 celica 2.2 5s-fe wont idle, wont erach 1400rpm
This could be a few different things.
1, Water temp sensor.
2, AFM Air Flow Meter.
3, Air temp sensor.
SOURCE: Plugs for Camry 2000 4 cyl.
The plugs that are supposed to be in a 2000 4 cyl Camry are :
PK20TR11 Toyota P/N 90919-01194
The K16TR11 plugs fit a variety of models.
They are found in the following units:
98/99 Corolla
95/97 Paseo
95/98 T-100 V-6
95-04 Tacoma V-6
00/04 Tundra V-6
There is no question that your dealer installed the wrong plugs.
I would really appreciate a FixYa rating for the information that I have provided you. Thnaks in advance.
It
can be low fuel pressure issue or clogged fuel pump. Or its engine related

Here are the most common causes of idle surge, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

Before you do anything, remove the Mass Air Flow Sensor, and examine the interior. Advise me of what you see.
