Suspect ignition relay module, first suspected vapor lock, but happens too randomly, sometimes while driving, sometimes on start up and sometimes one after the other. driving me crazy, got a diagnostic code 016 and cant find a meaning...
1) you must pass the Scanner +computer you will have a exactly diagnostic.
2) However you must reset the ignition timing to the manufacturer specification, Does not matter if your Electronic Ignition(EI)
3) TEST the coil ignition for defective.
4) cables spark plug for open or faulty
5) spark plug for defective.
6) EI module for defective.
God bless you

The problem is a faulty solenoid in the vapor recovery system. The solenoid is sticking open and allowing fumes from expansion of fuel in the fuel tank to enter the air intake and smother the engine. This is how the Mazda service tech explained it to me. It is a known problem on the Mazda 3 in various trims which Mazda refuses to acknowledge. Usually the check engine light comes on and the engine diag code reads mass airflow sensor, which is incorrect. I dealt with this for 6 months on my wife's 2005 Mazda 3i before the dealership figured it out. My cousin bought a 2007 Mazda Speed 3 which developed the same problem after a few months and was cured by the same fix.

i had a similar problem with my 626,what sorted it for me was to clean the crankcase breather tube on top of the rocker cover. The little valve inside this seems to stick but spraying some air intake cleaner (comes in an aerosol can) frees it out and allows the engine to breath better and so tick over evenly.

The ignition coil should be fine at that mileage. If spark plugs do not fix it suspect a faulty MAF sensor. If the MAF is sending a bad signal it will affect with the idle as the ecu is trying to compensate for the MAF.
