1998 Ford escort No crank no start. Slightly touching wires inside behind fuse area alarm light goes out & manual doors make clicking noise. Same area plug loose can't find connection. batt good.

Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good. At the starter motor, two voltage circuits, one comes from battery, hot all the time. The other circuit goes hot with key in the start position and is wired through neutral or clutch switch depending on the tranny.
The starter motor grounds through the engine block.
Any testing at starter motor, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set. Use a test light to check for voltage.
There are various testing procedures that you can use that bypasses some systems, just to see if starter motor will crank the engine. If you try that, make sure tranny is out of gear and functional parking brake is set.

Ignition just clicks when trying to start. Battery is charged.

Check your battery connections on the battery itself, and to the starter. A loose cable or one that is corroded will keep it from getting the proper voltage where it needs to go.

My 1984 Mercedes 300td will not crank over the battery is fine and the fuses are fine please help

There's nothing at all when you turn the ignition key? maybe just a clicking noise?

Start with the basics - the things that you can check and fix yourself.
  1. Are the battery cables tight?
  2. Check the earth cable where it connects to the engine/bodywork. Make sure it is clean and is actually earthing properly
  3. Check that none of the wires in either positive or earth cable are broken/corroded. This can cause non-starting.

1984-mercedes-300td-will-not-crank-over-drn4r4jcf5cpqfgonvky3zim-5-1.jpeg Batteries need a good earth.

If your car has automatic transmission it will only start in park or neutral. This is controlled by a separate solenoid - usually located on the side of the transmission case. If dirty or faulty, it will cause non-starting problems.

The starter motor could be sticking or faulty. First check the cable to the starter motor. To check if it is just sticking, put the car in gear and 'rock' it - that may free a sticking starter motor.

You say that your battery is fine. Are you absolutely positive? A failing/faulty battery can still be charged .. it will put the lights on - but it won't supply enough amps to crank the engine.

A quick check here is to either borrow a battery from your neighbour's car or use a car and booster cables to boost-start yours. If your car cranks over and fires up your battery is faulty.

If your car doesn't crank it points to starter motor trouble or solenoid trouble.

Battery has tested good, lights, radio, etc. are on, but when trying to start, you just get a "tick". Starter?

sounds like it.

Verify battery voltage should be approx 12.30V + give or take a few tenths with the engine off
When you turn over the car, the voltage should not drop below 10.5 volts at all

I would verify these voltages as it takes a lot of juice to turn over a starter and start a motor. I have seen batterys look fine but can't supply a voltage. I assume you have tried jumping your vehicle as well with the donor car running about 2k rpm? If the vehicle starts like this it is most likely a battery issue and not a starter.

Sorry I truly suspect 7 year old batteries a lot more than 7 year old starters. As for the click, the starter is made up of 2 parts, first, it pushes the gear out to engage the flywheel, when the gear is fully out, and engages, the starter starts turning to start the car. The click would be the gear either attempting to engage or engaging and the motor part of the starter failing. The starter will be located in the area of where the transmission and engine mate, usually in the front of the motor. Any autozone should be able to test your starter to ensure it's still good or tell you what failed on it.
