Blinkers and brake lights stopped working -1998 Chevy one ton

Blinkers and brake lights stopped working after hooking up a lawn mower trailer to my truck. The left blinker suddenly started working again, but the left brake light won't work at all. Have replaced fuses and looked for loose wires. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

SOURCE: tow plug

you have one of two things going on first check to see if the brake light on the left side is shorted out, it will be a 1157 bulb replace it and see if it works looking good does not mean it's good if it has a single contact then it's a 1156 bulb, check to make sure where the bulb socket is that the rubber inside the socket is not worn out and the bulb is shorting to ground. if it is buy a 1157 pig tail repair kit at any Nappa auto truck store or any trailer store. replace it if it needs it. Next if that does not fix it pull the left wheel off pull the drum off and look at the wires on the inside, if they are bare inside it's shorting out if you don't see a bare wire look at the color of the two wires and with a ohm meter and one wire disconnected from that side touch them at the plug and to ground one at a time you should have one wire going to ground one not if both wires going to the left side show they are shorted then you need to replace the wire or the electric coil. if you need more help just ask. If I can e-mail you I can send you a diagram and show you how to test if yo don't know. good luck.

SOURCE: Trailer brakes

Take a 12 volt test light... the kind that has a spring loaded clip to hold the probe into the wire, and insert it into the wire just before the trailer plug, vehicle side. (Blue I think) If there is a connection, the brake should see it and you should have an indicator light. When you activate the brake the test light should lite up. If not, move up to the brake actuator and test the blue wire. If there is nothing at the actuator, check the black wire. It is power to the controller. If no power there, check fuses again. If it does pick it up at the plug, connect the trailer and test the trailer itself. First ground to the trailer and then to the truck. Most problems are ground wire related. Then move to the axle and test it there. For the brakes to work, and even show on the indicator, there has to be a ground and power to the brakes themselves. There are 2 wires to each brake... a ground and a power. Test across both wires to make sure you have power and ground. You can also hook another trailer to your truck or another truck to your trailer. Lights can work through trailer ball ground. Brakes can't. leave the trailer unhooked from the trailer and hook the wiring up and test the lights. That usually will indicate a good or faulty ground. Also make sure there is a GOOD ground to the truck frame/body. Also try http://www.etrailer.com/faq-wiring.aspx. They have a great website with lots of info. Hope this helps. Mike

2000 Chevy Silverado. The trailer wiring-left and right blinkers and running lights have power but not the brake lights.

You can buy small adapters that you plug into the car harness connector and allows you to test that the power is being supplied correctly.

In your case, I would suspect that the trailer wiring is at fault, rather than the truck's wiring..

You will need a turn and brake signal box IF, you have different bulbs for brake and turn lamps. If the brake and turn bulbs are one(red)lens than no box will be required. Thanks, Dana

1994 chevy 3/4 ton brake light problem

If they both went out at the same time, it was probably a fuse, look for the fuse box and check for any burnt or blown fuses. Also check the bulbs as they could have melted off if they were burning while you perhaps went over a bump.

Tow plug

I take it the blinkers and brake lights work ok when not hooked up to the trailer? If yes, then the wiring to the tow hitch is not hooked up correctly. How many wires to trailer pig tail connection? U can have up to 7 depending on what you tow. Check to make sure these wires are hooked up from the truck to tow plug correctly: 7 wired---
brown-Rt turn and brake light, yellow-backup, white-ground, blue-electric brake, green-tail running lights, black-battery charger, red-left turn signal and brake light. Let me know if u have something other than 7 wire, I'll get the wiring color and source info for u.
