I left my key in the ignition all nite. I went to start it today and it will not turn over, the brake is locked, the gear shift is locked and no power to the car. 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo SS automatic. Can anyone help?
Not yet, going to try that tomorrow. Wouldn't I still be able to get the key out?Not yet, going to try that tomorrow. Wouldn't I still be able to get the key out?
my is stuck also. I can't turn it all the way down to the position to get it out. I also have to press a button under the gear shift to put it into gear eelse I can't move the gears......there is a connection there with three wire pulled out and one purple wire still in it.....right by the "gear shift release button" i guess you can call it................anyone know what this is
there is a purple wire, black yellow and green wire that is meant to connected into this plastic connector piece under the gear shift.........this is so stupid.....is my car battery going to die now?!?

you should be able to get the key out. you may have a problem with the ignition switch or the cylinder itself if you can't remove the key. I have seen it where the switch goes bad and wont allow you to turn the key all the way to the lock position. Sounds like you drained your battery. Have you tried to get it jump started? Sounds like you drained your battery. Have you tried to get it jump started?

Is it shifter on the floor ?
Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator
If the vehicle is equipped with a floor mounted console gear shifter, it has a ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator's purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of a ignition lock cylinder control actuator , and a park position switch that is located in the A/T shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded out to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when vehicle transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.
GM had problems with these ! Has a TSB - technical service bulletin !
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Description and Operation
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock solenoid (serviced as the automatic transmission shift lock actuator), as well as the body control module (BCM) and the engine control module (ECM). The shift lock solenoid is located within the floor shift control assembly with vehicles equipped with floor shift.
• The BCM controls the voltage to the shift lock control solenoid through the shift lock control solenoid controlled voltage circuit. The following conditions must be met before the BCM will remove voltage from the shift lock solenoid:
- The ignition is in the ON position.
- The engine control module (ECM) sends an input via GMLAN serial data to the BCM indicating the transmission is in the PARK position.
- The BCM determines the brake pedal is applied according the brake pedal position.
Since the shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded, the BCM supplies voltage to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position as the solenoid energizes. When the brake pedal is applied, the BCM turns the control voltage output of the shift lock control solenoid OFF, de-energizing the shift lock control solenoid. The de-energized solenoid releases the mechanical lock allowing the driver to move the shift lever out of the PARK position. When the transmission is out of the PARK position, the shift lock control solenoid remains de-energized.
During remote start operation, the BCM will energize the shift lock control circuit, locking the shift lever in the PARK position.
Replaced shifter on a cobalt , broken plastic part inside , wouldn't press on micro switch to disengage ! Found replacement shifter at auto slavage yard .$20.00 US
Hi there,
There is a (silly) safety lock on the ignition to stop it starting in gear, or the key being removed if not in park, and a sensible safety lock on the gear shift to stop kids letting it roll down a hill. Try putting your foot firmly on the brake, press the park release button beside the gear shift, while pulling the shifter out of park and back into park.
Getting the key out: Sometimes the steering wheel is placing pressure on the steering lock and key release mechanism, so try turning the steering wheel in any direction it can go while trying to release the key. It should come only out when you are in park.
that is park lock failure, build into the shifter section,it has an
electric solenoid lock. and a bypass button.
in the glove box, see oper. guide, it tells you where the erg. release
button location, and varies by sub body type and options.
its hidden cover, or a slot, on most cars. the slot type is to insert
any key in slot and push. bang, it opens (brake set, etc)
Gear shift is not totally in the park position - had the same problem with a 2011 Acura TL - a rubber band kept the gear shift lever from totally seating in the park position.
Brake Shift interlock system problem probably . This is a safety system that will not let you move the gear selector from park ,unless your foot is pressing on the brake pedal . Electrically controlled locking solenoid , wiring , brake switch used to control this .
I have towed several of these with same problem. Sounds like to me it needs to go back in for the ignition switch again. Unless it's not going into park. If it's not going into park it would be a shift linkage issue and needs to be adjusted. Chris J.C. Towing & Recovery
do not try to put the key in lock. if it will still start, then you will be able to replace the lock cylinder. if you rotate it to lock then you might not get it to turn again. as for the gear selector, there is a release on the shifter. some have a slot to stick a key and push down as you change gears. others you may have to take apart the console, and you will see the release lever.
Sounds like the clutch is not catching or the trans could be having problems. It may have some loose parts in the clutch. It could be that your car has locked up in security mode. I have to do this to my grandmothers van every once in awhile. Press the brake, try to turn to steering wheel all the way to left or right and try to turn the key.
Not yet, going to try that tomorrow. Wouldn't I still be able to get the key out?
