Security Failed - Do I have any options to avoid high cost replacement of entire instrument cluster?

If you have a chipped key with a transponder you might find like the vw the clocks have to be programmed to the cars ecu as the car won't start part of the immobiliser system

Odometer/Trip Odometer
The odometer and trip odometer are displayed in the integrated circuit LCD display. The instrument cluster records the total mileage of the vehicle using information received from the PCM, and electronically displays this information in the LCD. If this information is not received, the LCD displays all dashes. How did you prove that instrument cluster isn't bad ?
Did you have a factory scan tool hooked up , check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's ? View data to the instrument cluster etc...

Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop.

• The speedometer/odometer is inoperative

• Powertrain control module (PCM).
• Instrument cluster.

• Go To Pinpoint Test F .

It means you need a new instrument cluster. You can't just replace one thing, but rather the entire panel. While it is best to have a professional do this (especially if it is under warranty) you can order a new cluster and install it yourself.

The problem sounds like the battery has run down. Even though the ignition is off, things like clocks and the radio draw small amounts of power to retain their settings, and the instrument cluster doesn't draw as much power as the starter. It usually takes about a month or so to drain the battery. Try jump starting the car, or put it on a battery charger for a while.

The odometer/trip display in this model is a LCD display and it is burned out, it is a common fault on all GM models in this model year range. The problem can be repaired but it requires the Instrument cluster be removed form the Van and be sent out to a GM approved repair center. These repair shops are on the Internet just google GM instrument cluster repair. The cost is about $160.00 US.
The gas gauge is a separate problem, it is caused by a defective gas level sending unit inside the gas tank. TO replace the level sensor for the gauge you must remove the gas tank from the van. To do this repair you need a good hydraulic floor jack, jack stands to support the car and a good set of common hand tools and a helper if you do the job on the ground. Use great caution when working on a gas tank as the risk if fire and explosion is quite high if proper care is not taken to a avoid creating sparks. Always dicinnect the battery negative cable before starting work on any part of the car. The parts cost for this is about $200 and 4-5 hours of hard labor.

Indicator bulbs for what? If you are talking about indicator bulbs in your instrument cluster, you must remove the instrument cluster to replace them. Then, it depends on what kind of car you are talking about. Some of the newer instrument clusters use non-replaceable, LED lamps. When these fail, the entire instrument cluster must be replaced or shipped out for repair.

For the speedo, first check to make sure the sensor at the output shaft is fully installed--it has to engage the gear in the tranny. If that is good, jack up the drive wheels and put jack stands under the car. Connect a voltmeter to the speed sensor. Start the car and put it in gear. You should get a reading that increases with speed. Since you have a new sensor, failure to get a reading indicates the gear in the tranny has failed. If you are getting a reading, the problem is in the wiring.
If you tell me your model, year, and engine size I may be able to pull up your wiring diagram to provide more specific checks on the wiring.

For lack of idle, first check for vacuum leaks on both ends of any hose connected to the intake manifold. If no leaks, recommend you remove the idle air control valve and clean the valve, passages, and the throttle body. If you need pictures/directions, please send your model/year/engine size.

the car, and all of its parts, is over 20 years old. all mechanical things wear out. i would look on ebay or call around to junk yards and find a used instrument cluster and pay someone to put it in if it is a big deal. a new one will cost more than the value of the car if you can even find one. there may be a video on youtube of someone installing a cluster on this model if you are inclined to try it yourself.
some clusters are easy and some are difficult to remove.

Hi I'm Rick! I'm afraid you have a cluster problem, the cluster houses the gauge package you see in front of you.. all your gauges operate from the printed circuit board to which they are attached and a portion of that board has failed.. The fix is to replace the cluster.
