parking pawl in trans might be damaged, do you park on alot of hills,that might be the reason

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the ****** fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

probly a brake lamp switch or shift interlock stuck

most cars have an interlock that wil not let you out of park unless you are on brake pedal but this system is electrical so check fuses and brake light switch and most have rel. sol. at gear shift lever. assuming batt is charged of course

there is a release on the brake pedal that lets the transmission shift out of park you should hear it click when you put your foot on the brake

SOUND THAT YOU SHIFTER CABLE MAY NEED ADJUSTMENT/REPLACEMENT

Try it while someone rocks vehicle forward & back, and also try pushing brake pedal hard too when rocked forward.

Not sure that this is the solution, but I found a work around on my Durango. If you take off the cover on the shifter there is a lever (button) that you can dislodge and the vehicle will release out of park. After I did this a couple of times, I haven't had the issue happen again.

Ok if this is going on 9 out of 10 times it is from the switch from your brake deppresion sen- under the dash. comman problem with these models.
