I have a 1995 Volkswagen Jetta 3 Gl, the blinker system seems to be malfunctioning. When i use my blinkers, either the right or left, Both brake lights flash in sequence. Also on my dash, when i push the brake my left and right blinker lights light up dimly. I have looked online and nobody else seems to have the same problem that i do, Either that or i am not looking in the right spots, If anybody has some ideas on how to fix this let me know. Thanks.

I replaced the hazard switch relay, still no good, and replaced all the bulbs

This is a known problem with these cars. The problem is in the combination switch (turn signals/wipers etc behind the steering wheel). When dirt and muck accumulates back there, it shorts the contacts and activates the flasher (even though no lights come on), and I agree with you: It's very annoying!
I recommend going to www.tdiclub.com and search the forums for something like "flaky turn signal switch" - there is a whole thread on how a fairly handy person can fix the problem without paying the dealer an arm. Or a leg. (I emphasize caution when working with an active airbag though. Read carefully!) I'm going to be doing the same thing on my 2002 later this week.
Good luck.

Hi there. Open the hood and look to the right side of the headlight housing. There is a small box that is seperate from the actual headlight housing that is about 2-3 inches wide and about 4-5 inches long. There is a small tab on the top of it that you must depress to remove it. I took me some time to get this done because it was the first time for me and I wasnt sure this was right or not. I actually depressed the tab and used a screwdriver to pry the box open from the side and it popped off finally. Be careful as the tab can snap because it is made of plastic, but I pressed it pretty hard and it did not. Next reach in with fingers and twist the white colored housing counter-clockwise until it snaps out. Pull out the housing and pinch the sides (I had to use a flat head screw driver to get enough leverage on the bulbs plastic base to pry it out) and pull the bulb out. Takes some pressure because they are snapped into place. Put in the new bulb and make sure it snaps in. Now just reverse the procedure and you are good to go!

sounds like a short circuit or an earthing problem , could be the wireing or possibly water or damp in the fitting or ruber seals
