Very possible.
You may have damaged a rod bearing or piston pin from lack of oil.

SOURCE: engine noise at cold start-up.

Sounds like your oil pump inside the engine is not pumping oil fast enough when you start your vehicle its common problem for mitsubishi motors my car does the same thing.

The only thing in that area that can really cause a knocking sound are the valves and tappets. Check the valve clearances or the lifters for a defect.

2004 Ford explorer engine knocking

take it to an accredited service shop that has experience on your make of engine and have a proper diagnosis done and quote
it is possible that there is a spinning main bearing and the test is a oil pressure test using a mechanical gauge
some times it spins , low oil pressure -knocking other times it stops and the oil pressure goes back up , knocking stops
should I be correct , normally it can be repaired in car by removing the sump and replacing that bearing shell, of the shaft is not damaged
i would steer away from a new engine or suggestions of a blown engine but it could be serious

A knocking that starts when engine is cranked then it goes away

The knock is likely a worn connecting rod bearing. Are you using the correct weight of oil, never use any heavier than 10W30W, heavy oil viscosity's cause slow circulation through the oil passages and starve the engine's bearings for oil.

Knocking knoise under 1500 rpm

If your car has hydraulic tappets and low low oil pressure at engine speeds then it can make tapping noises. Oil pressure is needed to maintaine the tappets clearances, excessive cleaeances will produce noises.

Checked oil. it was 1 to 2 quarts low. no idea for how long. seems as though the top of the engine makes a slight tap or clacking sound when accelerating. what is the least that the problem could be. and...

It sounds like bearing noise to me. you ran it to low on oil and ran a bearing dry. you can try a thicker oil. if it doesnt go away your gonna need a motor job.

Knocking noise just started. Gets worse when accelerating. Seems to go away at certain rpm.Not sure what it could be?

Worn wrist pin or worn connecting rob bearing, regardless it a sign or worn internal engine bearings. Try adding some Lucas engine oil additive and see if the knocking goes away. If it does then it's your connecting rod bearing and if it's still there. Then it's going to be a worn wrist pin and will need to be replaced before you loose the engine from a broken piston.

Thank you for using fixya and good luck

Loud knocking sound when giving gas or changing gears. Oil is fine.

the oil pump may be wearing out. The bearings in the engine could be allowing too much oil to pass through, and cause a low oil pressure around the other parts, including the camshaft or main bearings.

Knocking when engine gets hot and car stopped

The fan clutch can make a knocking noise when it tries to engage. At idle it will have a rhythm to it when it tries to engage. You will have an over heating condition and the air conditioning may not work properly.

The fix is to replace the fan clutch and reprogram the engine control module.

I have a knocking noise at idle in my 97 Chevy Lumina...It goes away when I accelerate. What could this be?

after oil change' check oil pressure cold and then hot , then idle, if it goes up when reving it hot, thats good sort of,then if it goes way to low at idle and knocks, check idle speed. Fix it if so, still there , in the old days we would be cheap and put in a high flow oil pump, now I drive the "siht" out of a cheap car to see how long they last! It will supruse you> seen a 97 lumina with 400,000 km. slight knock and still going.

96 Suburban v8/7.4L/454 K2500, Knocking Noise??

sound like an internal engine problem. either one or more of the pistons has "piston slap" and that knocking will diminish as the engine warms up or possibly a rod bearing is worn out. have a tech do a manual oil pressure test to make sure the oil pump and main bearings are ok. piston slap or knock that decreases when the engine warms up is not that serious, but a rod bearing knock or possible oil pump failure should be taken care of asap.
