I have the belts, water pump, gaskets ,strech bolts and valves. how do i take it apart and put it back together? i have the tools but have never done this on a lexus v8, only on american cars, a 69 bmw 2002 and a 1986 audi annerversy coupe gt.
Not too bad. Not much room, just enough to drop the starter. It is probably easier to go up through exhaust if you can get your exhaust shield off the manifold .

Have the timing checked out. If it is off a couple of teeth, the engine should run, but will die when warmed up. Your 8 Cylinder uses a timing belt with a hydraulic belt tensioner. If the tensioner is leaking, or worn from old age, the belt may jump a couple of teeth. I believe your engine is an interference engine. If the belt has slipped, it is possible you may have bent valves, or worse.
Just wondering, when the engine dies on you while driving, does it start right back up, or does it start up only after cooling down?
Hello, Here are the steps for removing and reinstalling your water pump.
Removal
Disconnect the positive battery cable.
Put a drain pan under the radiator and drain the coolant. Drain the coolant out via the drain plug on the radiator.
When drained close the drain plug.
Put another drain pan under the timing belt cover.
Now you need to remove the timing belt cover.
Use a ratchet and remove all the bolts to the time belt cover.
Remove timing belt cover.
When you get the cover off remove the timing belt.
***NOTE*** due to the time, labor and potential cost of replacing the water pump and the fact that the timing belt is right there it is recommend to put a new timing belt on during the installation process.
Remove the bolts that secure the coolant inlet pipe with a ratchet.
Remove the pipe and gasket.
Remove the belt and idler pulley attached to the water pump. Don't get and coolant or grease on it.
Now you need to remove the mounting bolts from the water pump with a ratchet.
Remove the pump.
Inspect the seating of the gasket real well.
Remove all the crud off it with a lint free rag, I repeat lint free rag.
Now to install the new water pump
Install the new water pump with the new gaskets provided. Never reuse the old gaskets.
Install mounting bolts and torque them at 14-18 foot pounds.
There is a bolt that will connect the alternator bracket to the water pump that needs to be torqued at 23-38 foot-pounds.
Reinstall the idler pulleys and tighten down with your ratchet.
Replace the gasket for the coolant intake pipe with the new gasket.
Now torque the remaining bolts to 14-18 foot pounds.
Slide the [hopefully new] timing belt back.
Reattach the timing covers.
Tighten them bolts with your ratchet.
Use a mix of 50% water and 50% antifreeze and fill up the radiator and overfill.
Squeeze the radiator hoses a few times to get the air out of the hoses.
Hook your battery back up.
Start the car and let it heat up to full running temperature, with the heat on and check for leaks.
The water pump on the 92 Laser is easily replaced. You just need to
untension the the belt driving the bump. Once you have done that all
you need to do is undo the bolts and take the pump into your local auto
parts dealer. Now that you have the pump install it and retension the
belt.
U actually have
to remove alternator belt and powersteering/a/c belts, then remove
timing belt cover, remove timing belt adjuster, and slide timing belt
off top pulley, making sure you mark it before removing it, so as to
put it back in same position. Next, unbolt 2 bolts at bottom of water
pump (this is a bit fiddly, but doable, then, undo water pump, replace
with new water pump, being sure to use gasket cement, aswell as new
gasket, which should be supplied with pump, then put it all back
together, in reverse order of removal. Fill cooling system, check for
leaks, and voila, u have done it :)
You should buy all new belts and a water pump for the car. You will have to take off the
power steering belt, the alternator belt, the upper belt cover, support
the motor, take off the motor mount, take off the front wheel , take off the engine under covers , line up the TDC timing mark(pulley to cover), take
off the lower pulleys, take off the lower cover, take off the timing
belt, water pump belt, and now
you can unbolt the water pump, scrape the gasket, and replace it. If you put it back together , do not replace the water pump and it goes bad you will kick your self . Now
the good news, if you have tools,a compressor, an air gun(for lower
pulley bolt), patience , and four to eight hours to kill, you can
actually save money and do it your self.
Hi, you will need some special tool like : External torx (star)socket, pully and regular tool (# 10,12,14 etc..metric) to change the water pump.First, you need to clear the room for the job because such as Two belts -(alternator,air cond., pump ect and pully) need to disconnected and take out the plastic cover, tire e.t.c. There are about ten bolts. The water pump is inside the plastic cover which turns by the timing belt. I strongly recomment to change the timing belt at the same time ($30.00-timing belt- It last about 80000-90,000 miles). Remember to mark the timing gear carefully when you take the timing belt out. This will help you put the timing belt back in the right degree for the engine perform. Water pump can only replace after the timing belt is disconnected. Take care
The water pump is always easy to find because it is driven by the belts so has to be on the belt side of the engine, and has to have a major radiator hose going to it.
It looks like you just take the serpentine belt off, unbolt the pump, and replace it. Loosen/tighten all the bolts diagonally in at least 2 stages, and use some gasket sealer on the new gasket.
could be the head gasket gone, if you take it to a garage they can do a test on it which will take about 10 minutes, if you are leaking water but not on the floor there is a good chance its going into the exhaust which will cause steam(white smoke) out the exhaust
Use tools quater inch socket set, remove all belts, use size 10 socket. loosen all bolts and one nut, remove at bottom, put new gasket and refitt new pump. replace all belts and refill water with antifreeze 40% and water 60%. Marco 0736775896
