The car is over heating while idling and then it will just stop

Had changed the oil and fluids in a 96 thunderbird & shortly after that it would run hot!!While stopped, parked, or in drive the car would shake and then the engine started smoking and now the exhaust pipe is as well. Thought it was the water pump and thermostat, but not to sure now.

    Yes both the fans are working...I'm not sure as to the thermostat, was told that I needed to get a new one along with the water pump to cool the system.

Are BOTH cooling fans coming on?

Have you confirmed an operational thermostat?

  • Anonymous Dec 30, 2008

    Hi,

    Your Quote appears below

    (Quote) I'm not sure as to the thermostat, was told that I needed to get a new one along with the water pump to cool the system.

    The person who told you this is wrong. Throwing parts at a problem is a waste of your money and time. That's why they said it too you. It's easy to spend another persons money when the individual who's doing the talking stands to gain from it.

    Remove the thermostat and drive the car and drive the car, does it still overheat?

    Jump the heater core and drive the car does it still overheat?

    Are the heater hoses getting hot?

    Are the upper and lower radiator hoses equally hot?

    Use an infrared thermometer to confirm the radiator is not partially blocked.

    Show this message to the amature that told you to change the thermostat and water pump.

You don't state which fluids were changed. Exactly which were changed? Also are you sure that what was changed was exactly refilled?

Where do you add transmission fluid to a 96 ford thunderbird

look around near the firewall for another 'dip-stick', similar to your oil dip-stick, you check and add fluid into the same place. and you will want to check the fluid level when the engine is warmed up, and running. (unlike checking the oil) also, a funnel is recommended (dont want to spill fluid around) if you see the need to add fluid

2002 Kia Optima runs great, transmission has started acting irradcally. it will shift and pull in gear for a short time after starting, but after a few minutes it fails to move the car. I've changed...

Keep driving it like that & it won't work at all

When ever you even think you have a transmission
issue,you immediately stop using the vehicle or you
end up rebuilding the trans,your call,your money & lots of it

Ask yourself ---Why would changing the fluid do anything?

Old oil out / New oil in ?

You change trans fluid because it breaks down from the heat
That is it's job,to remove heat or your trans fails

Trans & Power Steering get changed every 3 years & not
over 30,000 miles ever on ALL Vehicles

The car when hot or cold may stumble and/or die at a stop sign and it may also do it going 70 mph down the road. It will catch itself and start running.

This may be the early sign of a blown head or gasket. Check your coolant to make sure it doesn't have oil in it or appear to be oily. This is the first thing that I would check.

No heat in my 96 ford thunderbird

Hello;
The most typical cause for no heat is a thermostat stuck open. Change out the thermostat and flush your cooling system. You should have heat then. Hope this helps, rate me highly. Thanks;
