Had changed the oil and fluids in a 96 thunderbird & shortly after that it would run hot!!While stopped, parked, or in drive the car would shake and then the engine started smoking and now the exhaust pipe is as well. Thought it was the water pump and thermostat, but not to sure now.
Are BOTH cooling fans coming on?
Have you confirmed an operational thermostat?
Hi,
Your Quote appears below
(Quote) I'm not sure as to the thermostat, was told that I needed to get a new one along with the water pump to cool the system.
The person who told you this is wrong. Throwing parts at a problem is a waste of your money and time. That's why they said it too you. It's easy to spend another persons money when the individual who's doing the talking stands to gain from it.
Remove the thermostat and drive the car and drive the car, does it still overheat?
Jump the heater core and drive the car does it still overheat?
Are the heater hoses getting hot?
Are the upper and lower radiator hoses equally hot?
Use an infrared thermometer to confirm the radiator is not partially blocked.
Show this message to the amature that told you to change the thermostat and water pump.
You're very welcome. Have a happy, healthy, and safe New Year.

SOURCE: car running hot,shaking,and stopping.
You don't state which fluids were changed. Exactly which were changed? Also are you sure that what was changed was exactly refilled?
SOURCE: Have a 96 ford thunderbird
Check the color of the oil if it looks like a chocolate shake you have a blown head gasket
