Timing settings my jeep has jumped time and i need to know the exact degrees to set it at please and thank you

Ignition timing is a measurement, in degrees of crankshaft rotation, of the point at which each cylinder's spark plug fires. It is normally listed as a specification in degrees before or after Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.

On the 4.2L engine, the timing can be adjusted by turning the distributor in the engine. A graduated timing degree scale located on the timing case cover is used for reference when timing the ignition system. A milled index notch in the vibration damper is used to align the No. 1 cylinder ignition position of the crankshaft with the correct timing degree mark on the graduated scale.

there is a small black check connector next to the big black fuse block that has coded pins that you can jump to check different systems.but to check the timing you will need a jumper wire and jump pins te1 and e1 together. the location for the pins that you need to jump are located on the inside of the lid of the small check connector.start the truck and let it warm up and set the idle to around 800rpm and hook your timing light up to the battery and the #1 plug wire and put your jumper wire in. the engine speed should slow down a little and you should also be able to see the timing mark move with the timing light when you connect and disconnect the jumper wire.once you have everything hooked up loosen the dist. bolt and set the time to 10 degrees btdc at idle.tighten the dist. and unhook everything and and see how it runs.if not running to good the timing belt could be stretched or it could have jumped a tooth.the throttle position sensor can also make the timing to crazy things.....i hope this will help you let me and fixya know and a thumbs up if i did my job........if you have anymore questions let me know i have been working on toyota and lexus for 25 yrs......good luck.......

Hello nedmonston03: My name is Roger and I will help you. First in order to set the timing you need to put the computer into diagnostic mode. Over be the fuse box you will find a small box marked diagnostic. Open the box locate the terminals E1 and TE1. Start the engine and jump the two terminals together. This will set the computer so you can set static timing. If you set the timing with out doing this first you will never get to static timing. After you set the timing remove your jumper wire. Any other work to reset timing would have to be done internally.

There are so many possibilities.  Try pushing the time & set and change the time with the tuner knob.

your timing should be set at 10 degrees with the TE1 and E1 pins jumped in the diagnostic connector located under the hood (should be set at idle speed)

Then, the smog tech either does not know how to set base timing on your car, or he is trying to sell you something that you do not need. Base timing involves a procedure that requires a tech to utilize a set of pins to the ECU, and are jumped together. Under the hood, locate the diagnostic connector. Open the plastic cap, and look under it for the locations of the following pins: T and E1 (TE1 if you have a Calif spec car and E1). Using a paper clip, jump the two pins together. Hook up your timing light and set the timing to 10 degrees BTDC. Then, remove the jumper wire. Easy.
