Loud tapping when it starts, gets louder when i push the gas but it drives ok.
My 1996 Mazda MPV V6 has had a tapping noise problem for about 3 years and I have tried many oil additives and different oil grades with no resolution. Last week I tried the lightest synthetic oil I could find, Mobile 1 5W-20. As soon as I started the engine it had no noise at all. I have started it many times since and still no noise. I assume that the oil passages have become narrow over the years and this light oil is able to move through them quicker and keep the hydraulic lifters under proper pressure. You may have to beg or threaten your mechanic to use this oil. He will try to scare you into using a heavier oil. He may just be ignorant. But, stand your ground, Mobile 1 synthetic 5W-20.

Just took my car to the shop for the same appearent reason me also thinking it may be lifters. My mechanic said it spounds like a worn wrist pin ...... bad news for you if this is the case .......recomendations rebuild the engine or buy a new or remanufactured one. if the wrist pin lets go then you could throw a rod. If you must drive the car please be gentle

try adding some transmition fluid to the transmition . or have it towed to a repair shop

sounds like a wheel bearing maybe faulty from your text it sounds like it could be the osf you could try jacking vehicle up with engine off handbrake applied and in neutral spin the wheel and see if it makes noise or wiggle it to see if it has any play possibly take off greade cap and see if any grease in bearing /

Katrina, the fact that your car runs (like a beauty) when shes warmed up, indicates a fuel air mixture problem when cold. Your car is equipt with electronic fuel injection. This system utilizes a series of sensors that detect conditions such as engine temp, outside temp, humidity and air pressure to determine what mixture is perfect for the prevailing condition. For example, on a cold start, the sensors should know that the engine is not up to the proper operating temperature and provide more fuel and less air, (a richer mixture), until the engine warms, this emulates a choke on a vehicle equipt with a carburator. The problem either lies in the sensor itself, or the brain that interprets these inputs to decide what fuel/air mixture to deliver.

It could be the alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump or serpentine belt ilder tensioner pulley. Mostly we have been finding alternators whining. Compressors and water pumps usually grind or growl.
if the noise only happens when the car is moving it might actually be a bit of gear whine. if it makes the noise all the time it could probably be belt noise.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this
solution and show your appreciation.
You'll need someone reving it slightly, to make the noise appear, while you localize it. Once localized, cost can then be estimated.
