I have a 2001 Subaru Legacy b4, and when ever there is a heavy rain shower or constant rain for a few days, the boot/trunk floor always seems to be wet, then this makes the inside of the car smell damp and fog up the rear window. Any ideas on what I should be looking for to stop the boot leaking?

i think the problem lies in the speed senor mounted on the gearbox.
when it rains, water gets in the connection and shortens the sensor thus causing the problem with the speedo and when the car's stationary the sensor dries due to the heat and runs again.
please check the speed sensor/connections and keep them dry and without viberations.
hope this solves your problem.

Your mechanic is ok with saying that...however you should replace both head gaskets. This can get costly if you take it to have it done somewhere, but if you use a manual from your local library or buy one from your local auto parts store, its a much more cost effective way of fixing it. You are ok to drive it, be sure to check your fluid before you do. I would look into getting these changed within the next few weeks.
Thanks for using Fixya!

Please have your exaust pipes checked, perhaps a mount is burning. The catalytic converter can make a nasty odor when it is clogged. Check the wear on the serpintine belt.
