I've noticed that my truck has a variable vibration at highway speeds. Its been getting progressively worse over the past few years, but now it can get so bad that I can't see out of my rearview mirror. Some days its just a slight vibration and some days its really bad... sometimes the severity can change over a 40 mile drive! Yesterday, I decided to see if the vibration was any different if 4WD was engaged. Vibrations are greatly DECREASED when in 4WD. After going back in 2WD, the vibration comes back. Any suggestions?
That kind of vibration generally can be associated with a binding universal joint. Sometimes you can see a bit of rust around the seals, sometimes not. The "shake" test is generally valid only with vehicle off the ground and trans in neutral, but sometimes the bearings are fused with rust and do not move.If "eyeball" inspection reveals nothing , remove the driveshaft (s) and physically move joints. If overly loose or binding they are bad. If after complete inspection you still come up with nothing then it's time to look at other "oddball" things.
good luck
