1999 rav4 clunky gear change

100k on the clock, All fine until a couple of days ago, then difficult to change gear, with resulting clunking sound. No clutch slip when running, no visible signs of leakage from clutch master cylinder (that connects to foot pedal), Wondering if gear selector is adjustable or whatever? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

SOURCE: master or slave cylinder...leakage?? lines..??

I am totally unfamiliar with the particular setup you have, however I know a bit about clutches, Sifting through what you said, it appears that your clutch is set up too tight. By this I mean that the throwout bearing is always pressing on the release diaphram (or fingers) on the clutch cover. As you drive this is causing the clutch disc to overheat and slip. The repeated bleeding you are doing likely has no effect on this other than that the time you spend bleeding is allowing the clutch assembly to cool off. If the slave cylinder is part of the throwout bearing and is inside the bellhousing you need to remove it and get one that is slightly shorter. If the slave is mounted on the bellhousing and activates a clutch fork that moves the bearing you will need to find a means of backing off the slave adjustment so there is a bit of freeplay between it and the fork. likely since you can drive it you are looking at 1/4" or less play to get it right. My only concern would be that you may have overcentered the fingers on the pressure plate and damaged the return spring. slipping the clutch also has not done good things to the disc either. (like driving down the road with your foot on the brake is not good for brake pads)
Good luck with your project !!

SOURCE: 1997 hyandai accent gt clutch problem

hi considering age of car and that you have no leaks on hydraulics? may i suggest you try bleeding the clutch to rid of old fluid a couple of pumps may be suffice ? b/fluid does absorb moisture and heat over time hence recommendation tat fluid be changed at period specified in handbooks ie 12 monthly ?

SOURCE: Clutch pedal won't activate clutch. Why?

Thats really a toss up unfortunately. I assume you checked the fluid. Usually the slave cylinder will leak when it goes bad. Hope that helps.

Testimonial: "Replaced the Master cylinder first, no change, replaced the slave cylinder second, worked like a charm."

SOURCE: The clutch slips in first gear when it is hot.

the throw out bearing lubricant dries out or, a clutch plate spring is broken. replace the clutch: use an alignment tool to seat the clutch "straight" on the flywheel, you have a miss-aligned clutch because a shaft alignment tool was not used and, the throw out bearing was not properly lubricated when it was installed.

SOURCE: have freelander td4 03 plate,

Definitely a hydraulic issue. Iknow you said they were both changed, but its usually the master & slave assembly that go faulty on the Freelander. Both parts come filled with fluid and pre-bled and only require fitting, no bleeding. Check with garage to make sure they did not split / bleed them.

No Reverse and the fluid is dirty and smells funny.

Sounds like you blew out your reverse belt/gear in the transmission. Probably going to need a transmission rebuild/replacement.

You could have a shop check pump pressure - usually the cause is a weak pump or problems with the valve body.
Chances are if you just sit in drive at idle, it will also move on its own in a couple of minutes once the fluid warms up.
I never recommend changing fluid after 100k.

Weird shifting after changing ATF and replacing filter

An old saying is "don't change the fluid for the first time after 100k".
If the transmission has not been serviced before 100k doing it after that point often causes problems. It has something to do with what is floating around in the oil.
In your case you may have stirred up some junk that is now in the valve body.
