Mitsubishi L200 overheating

I have a mitsubishi l200 4life 2.5 turbo pick-up 2004,recently I have had some overheating problems, mainly bubbling in the header-tank. Initially replaced thermostat, bled & topped up coolant system all ok for a week or 2, Problem reoccured with slight bubbling in header tank, I replaced thermostat a 2nd time, which I found to be closed on inspection. Repeated the process again and still slight bubbling. Extensive road test 30-40 miles no over heating, gauge steady, water level header tank correct to manufactures recommended level. Unsure if there is an underlying problem such as head gasket failure or whether it is simply incorrect thermostat. Or could is be a normal running issue for this vehicle

Hi I have a simular problem with over heating on my 02 L200 Animal. Under normal conditions it's fine but when the engine is under load i.e high revs then the temp gauge goes through the roof. I don't get the bubbling header tank though (yet..?). I've had it into Mitsubishi who claim they can't find anything wrong with it. Like you my concern is this undiagnosed head gasket failure. But it maybe something as simple as a shot radiator? The system isn't loosing any coolent so am not sure how to proceed. What I don't want to do is throw money at it chasing possible problems! ARRgghh!

I have the same problem with my 4 Life. The engine overheats under load. I have had a new cylinder head put on approximately 40,000 miles ago (current mileage is 220,000 miles) but this problem has just started. I have put a new stat in & a new radiator cap which seemed to me to cure the problem for a while, but the issue has returned again. A mechanic has told me that it could either be the radiator that has failed or the waterways in the engine block could be rusted & therefore not allowing enough water to get around the engine.
A while ago, I had leak that was visible but inaccessible to the rear of the engine block adjacent to the bulkhead. I took it to a local garage & they used rad weld to cure the problem. I'm wandering if this has caused a more serious problem.

I have the same problem with my 2003 L200, its overheats (gauge goes to red) above 2500 rev's but at 2000 rev's its fine. Sick of it though.

My L200 had overheated on several occasions, took down to Mitsubishi in Leicester. Told me the head had cracked!!!! the car only had done 53000 miles. Changed the head, ok for a bit. not even 2 000 miles later, overheating and forcing water into expansion tank again!!!!!!! Changed the thermostat, flushed rad and cooling system. Took down to really great mechanics but they cant find anything wrong. Where do I go from here? dont know where to look now. Anybody with some advice???????

I have an l200 animal, i started getting the same symptoms, bubbling noises, over heating, water being discharged into the header tank, i had a good look around the engine, there was no oil in the water or water in the oil ( signs of head gasket failure) when the radiator cap was off and i revved hard nothing happened, no dip in water levels and no splashing out. i took the water pump off and the impellor had sheered off the shaft. fitted a new pump and its been fine, maybe all these cracked cylinder heads and warped heads are to do with the engine being run with the fault not being cured.

It seems these vehicles are very prone to overheating. I have the same problem, boiling up and emptying the radiator its OK normal running but get upto 70mph and temp goes sky high.
I have just fitted a brand new cylinder head and gasket 3 weeks ago but the problem has re-occured. Radiator seems clear, have removed thermostat and still it does it, water seams to be circulating so dont think its water pump.HAS ANY BODY SOLVED IT YET

Take the expansion pipe off and watch for water coming out. if it spurts out in regular bursts its one of the cylinders pressurising the water system.you can work out which cylinder is at fault by taking one glow plug out at a time and running engine till you find the one that dont spurt.if you are on a budget you could put some block sealer in the rad and run it for a few hours with the glow plug out and injector feed pipe loose.this will force the solution into the hole that the compression was coming thru.....

One solution I read was to replace water pump given that impeller could alternately slip / bind on shaft due to heating

the problem that everyone is talking about is the same at 4d56 and 4d68 engines and have a simple solution.
i run a 4d56 at full rpm with 1.5bar of pressure on turbo vegetable oil, in freeway and all terrain no problem at moment, i have a galant diesel with 4d68t that is similar with the 4d56 , and no problems in that part. all my cars have more than150000 km made. i sold either a old car mine a space wagon (expo) with same engine, 310000km made.

more information please contact- me.

It is a cracked cylinder head, these engines are weak and should not be turbocharged or intercooled. My brothers L200 has had new block etc cost £1200 for a rebuild. Its now common knowledge that this is a major problem with the L200 range.

Hi all
I have a Shogun Sport 2002 fitted with a 4D56T 2.5tdi engine.
I had to fit a brand new cylinder head to this vehicle because it cracked just on 90k miles [i have had it from new and I am a motor vehicle engineer]. When I replaced it I also removed and flushed the radiator - replaced crankshaft pully, timing belts, water pump - removed egr valve and blanked it off. Flushed heater matrix and engine block.
The head came complete with new injectors, valves, rockershaft etc.
I ran it till hot then flushed the oil - replaced oil & filter - removed water from cooling system and added a coolant mixture with a conditioner [Forte].
All new drive belts and Sport runs sweet.
Must be a design flaw in the head that causes this to crack and always around the 90 / 100k miles.

Sudds,

I have also a Mitsubishi L200 1999 2.5 turbo diesel. I had the same problem. Your head gasket is blown and you MUST try and get it fixed. Check the oil content at all times. The reason why I say that is because your water must be mixing with the oil. During repairs, check if the head is warped.

I have a 56 plate l200 Animal, at 56000 miles i started having over heating problems. The thermostat would rise into the red and them blow water out of the header tank. After many atemps to find what the probem was they finally found that there was a problem with the head. The head was replaced, but after another 1000 miles it happend again, they then relaced the short motor, radiator and the rest of the cooling system yet it happend again. Mitsubishi replaced the head gasket and since them touch wood it has been running OK. All i can say is that god the warrenty coverd everything, the car is due to go in Sept, cant wait to see the back of it.

Get rid of the thermostat! take it off!!!!

  • Anonymous Jun 15, 2012

Agree that this is a general cure where the thermostat is suspected and just means that the engine takes longer to heat up - especially in the winter - however, the L200 thermostat is not like others and contains the seal for the housing - you need to gouge out the centre and put it back in - also, some clever **** at T has put the thermostat at the end of the bottom hose rather than the start of the top hose i.e. conventional location?

Where is the location of starter relay in Mitsubishi L200 model 2004

It is in the main fuse box under the hood, (Black box next to the battery). It is relay 6. A small, black, square block that should pull out. It will be a tight fit so it might come out suddenly. Try this website for a diagram of the fuse box.

They are normally hidden up under the dash near the interior fuse box. This job is best undertaken by an alarm installer.

I have a 2002 l200 turbo intercooled with 105000 miles ,engine putting a slight amount of engine oil into water what can be the problem

Alrighty ... That's not a whole lot of miles, but being as it is turbo'd, maybe I can understand it. First: Watch your tailpipe. Does the exhaust appear to be white? Shut off the engine, go out, pop the hood, open up the radiator cap. Start the engine. Does the water bubble, or smoke vent off the top? It could be a broken head gasket, if it does not show these signs, it could be that instead of going into the cylinder, it moved it from the water to the oil passages. Either way, just watch that the reverse does not occur: That WOULD be disastrous.
