I have a problem lately where my vans engine slows down and almost wants to die. When it does this the volt gauge will go up and down as the engine seems to rev up and go back down. When it's done this I've checked the volts off the battery an get a steady 14v. It had a new battery put in about two weeks ago because it would not hold a charge. The alternator was checked and is not the problem. My buddy thinks its the lead cable off the battery as the one off the positive was very corroded, and has a few cracks in it. I am going to replace this, but doubt it is this cable. I should mention when it has this problem, I have disconnected the battery and the thing runs totally fine but once the battery is hooked back up it does it again. Thanks for any help!

if you van has a security system in it, it could be causing this problem. they usually disable the starter circuit. Paul has listed good places to start. but if they don't fix it do this: when your trying to start but its not working have some one check voltage at the starter. there are 3 points to check 1: where battery cable connects 2: where starter connects to solenoid 3: small wire that operates solenoid. if there is voltage at all three point replace starter it has a shorted / open spot on armature. voltage at 1 and 3 but not 2 replace solenoid. voltage at 1 but not at 3 and you have already checked the items Paul identified check wiring between neutral safety switch and solenoid.

14.6 means your voltage regulator or diode is suspect Despite having new alternator .Ive cross refrenced your smptoms in the haynes workshop manual and alternator is your only end answer. The haynes test is to start vehicle with multi meter connected across the battery terminals, increase the engine speed until the reading remains steady should be approximately 12 to 13v and no more than 14v.switch on as many accessories as possible(headlights heater blower radio etc)check that the alternator maintains the regulated voltage at around 13 to 14v.If the regulated voltage is not as stated then alternator is to be repaired/replaced.Good luck with it and a happy new year.

The problem sounds intermittent, if you put volt meter on the battery while it is at that 19volt mark/reading(on the gauge cluster) you will be able to see if it is true. If your alternator is really charging over 16volts the lights should be getting brighter then usual and/or they are burning out. Find out ASAP, if the alternator has a defective voltage regulator, it needs to be replaced. Prolong use will damage components.

Your fear is probably right. Get it checked before any major overhaul.

I have the same problem Screw napa the can't tell the differance at least not in Georgia. They said it was the battery. Anothe machanic said it's not the altornator either could be a wiring or computer problem. I think I 'll try to trade it in
Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities.
It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then
it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure
or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty
ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.
To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.
