Change the Cam Position Sensor.. It done the same thing on mine. The sensor runs about
40. to 60.00 at most parts stores Your gonna have to take off the upper intake or plenum to
get access to it. Top of the engine right side, you'll see it

Sounds like the shifter cable is corroded to the point that it might snap. Replace the shifter cable. Best wishes to you.

Had the same problem on my 1999 cirrus lxi. Replaced the output speed sensor on the tranny and topped off the tranny fluid... cleared the check engine light and the cirrus ran great. Caution...the output speed sensor reqires removal of the front left tie and plastic weatherproofing to replace. once you find it's locvation, the replacement is relatively easy.

Found the problem
diagnostic plug under dash was broken& the contacts were touching causing the computer to go screwy
how did that happen maybe recent service tech did this perhaps sounds like some one might have aggressively ripped the OBD 2 plug out of the under dash receptacle??
