My mom bought a 1989 Mercury Topaz 2.3L (not the HP) for $100 that has sat for about 3 years. It has 52K miles, and looks good. After dumping $600 into brakes, weather seals, window motors, CD player, etc., it runs beautiful.
Heres the problem: About a month after driving the car every day, to and from work, the transmission stopped shifting from 2nd into drive. It went from 1st to 2nd but the RPM's were very high before shifting. She says, she ran about 5500 RPM's at 30 MPH all the way home. She called a local garage, and the guy said "It sounds like the transmission governor." After paying him to fix it, and the tow bill, the transmission still doesn't shift right, so she says. She also says "It acts like there is a 3 speed auto where there should be a 3 speed auto w/ electronic overdrive." It revs the tach up higher than it should be, running at 55-60 MPH. Any suggestions? I mean, any at all?
Overdrive should be activated by a solenoid ..internal and perhaps an external one also.. in 89 the computer was primitive and i dont think controlled shift points..also if engine health is bad or missing or vacuum to any cacuum modulator at trans is damaged or compromised.. these issues could occur...good luck
